As a boy, Fee Stubblefield promised his fiercely independent grandmother that he would never “put her in an old folks’ home.” That aspirational promise, made with love and care, would be something he always remembered—and a commitment he eventually made within the senior housing and care industry.Seeking to create vibrant and engaging communities where we can thrive in our older years, Fee has encapsulated the best insights from his years in the industry in this book. He addresses everything from how to pick the right capital partners, hiring the best people for a culture of caring, introduces the concept of aspirational promises, addresses the deep issues in the industry exposed by Covid-19 and our attitudes toward a rapidly aging population.Fee’s passion was born of an unusual upbringing as part of a family that owned and operated Lehman Hot Springs and its sacred healing waters, a metaphor for the care needed by our senior citizens. He learned business lessons, like most entrepreneurs, through the difficulties and victories of the Springs Living communities. However, regardless of the lessons—the central core of the Culture of Promise is transparency, accountability, care, respect, and a commitment to the people at the heart of that promise.

Compassionate leadership isn’t about being nice; when practiced effectively, it’s a strong leadership style that can elevate your spirits and profits. Compassionate leaders are not weak. They are tough leaders who understand that they can be good to their people and deliver stronger results. In fact, taking care of your people actually leads to better results. In his new book, Donato Tramuto—recognized CEO, business leader, innovator, and philanthropist,—makes the case that compassion is a key leadership principle that • powerfully drives trust, success, and innovation;• raises morale, builds stronger teams, and improves overall performance;• creates sustainable commitment to an organization’s mission and values. Tramuto interviewed nearly 40 successful leaders who practice compassionate leadership and reveals the best strategies from their playbooks. He then combined these interviews with his own insights, numerous studies, and original, qualitative research of 1,500 participants to unleash the measurable data and benefits of compassion in the workplace. Most leaders have an innate desire to be compassionate, but many don't know how to put it into practice. This book shares inspiring stories and actionable examples of how proven leaders have accomplished this and how you can too. The bottom line on bottom lines: compassionate leadership is about better people and better business.

James (“Jim”) McGill Buchanan (1919-2013), surely seemed an unlikely prospect for winning a Nobel Prize in Economics when he was born in rural Tennessee on October 3rd.
Many of the works on Buchanan’s extensive list of publications stemmed from a single insight from early in his career: because neither the state nor society is a singular and sentient creature, a great deal of analytical and policy confusion is spawned by treating them as such. Collections of individuals cannot be fused or aggregated together into a super-individual about whom economists and political philosophers can usefully theorize in the same ways that they theorize about actual flesh-and-blood individuals.
Aggregative thinking lumps together a great many individuals into large categories such as “the nation” or “the government” and then treats each of these categories as if it is a unitary thinking, choosing, and acting individual. Under this approach, “the social welfare” is promoted by “the government,” with the latter treated as if it’s an organism possessing a brain, and as if that brain’s main interest lies not in serving itself but, rather, in serving the nation. Overlooked are the processes—all churning with assorted incentives and constraints—that lead individuals with diverse interests to undertake actions such as forming governments, becoming government officials, and dealing with government both as citizens who receive benefits from it and who incur costs to sustain it and to affect its activities.
From the very start, nearly all of Buchanan’s lifetime work was devoted to replacing this approach with the individualistic one—a way of doing economics and political science that insists that choices are made, and costs and benefits are experienced, only by individuals.
