  I decided to write this book because of the need for an effective system of managing and enhancing people's ability to communicate. Its applications span business as well as personal interactions. It can be a simple way of assessing the personalities of people around you and enabling you to better interact with them. I've played the role of an employee in middle management as well as upper management. One essential skill for any good manager is communication. It is important to be able to assess the people you are managing and also to be able to effectively deliver the correct messages. It is not only important to deliver the ideas, but it also needs to be done in a way that impacts the audience correctly. An effective manager must also assess and manage the emotional states of the people involved. I have spent a good part of my life working as an employee and in upper management and middle management. I have also consulted management for many different types of organizations in the public as well as the private sector. I have worked in specific industries such as transit, technology, public works, city government, the military, and hospitality. My approach has always been to try to create effective modes of interaction and communication between employees and middle management, as well as between management and upper management. 
  This book is concerned mostly with daily interactions at the employee level. The system and skills taught can be applied to any interaction in the business and personal life. Management systems are often well thought out and well structured, but quite often, they do not lend themselves to the chaotic, on-the-spot timber of human interactions. The Tao of Human Communications is a system rooted in present-moment fluid interactions.   The Toltec civilization emerged in central Mexico following the decline of Teotihuacan, one of the most powerful and influential cities of ancient Mesoamerica. With Teotihuacan’s fall around the 7th or 8th century, the region experienced a power vacuum, creating an opportunity for new societies to rise. Among them were the Toltecs, a people who would shape the political, military, and cultural landscape of Mesoamerica for centuries to come. 
  The origins of the Toltecs remain a subject of scholarly debate, but many sources trace their roots to northern Mexico, possibly the arid regions of modern-day Zacatecas or the deserts beyond. By the 10th century, they had established themselves in the Valley of Mexico, where they founded their capital, Tula. The early rulers of the Toltecs, including the semi-legendary Mixcoatl, are credited with uniting various groups under a centralized government and fostering a warrior-based society that would come to dominate the region. Mixcoatl's son, Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, is one of the most famous figures in Toltec history. Said to be both a king and a priest, he promoted the worship of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity, and encouraged a cultural shift away from excessive militarism and human sacrifice. However, his reign was met with opposition from factions who favored more warlike practices, leading to his eventual exile. His departure, shrouded in myth, would later influence Aztec beliefs and the idea of a prophesied return. 
  Tula, the heart of the Toltec Empire, reflected the ambitions and architectural ingenuity of its people. Expanding over several square miles, the city featured impressive pyramids, colonnaded halls, and massive stone warriors that stood as sentinels over its ceremonial centers. The city's strategic location allowed the Toltecs to control trade networks that extended as far as the Yucatán Peninsula and beyond.

  Throughout the 19th century, American settlers pushing across the Western frontier came into contact with diverse American tribes, producing a series of conflicts ranging from the Great Plains to the Southwest, from the Trail of Tears to the Pacific Northwest. Indian leaders like Geronimo became feared and dreaded men in America, and Sitting Bull’s victory over George Custer’s 7th Cavalry at Little Bighorn was one of the nation’s most traumatic military endeavors.  
  	Given this history, Tecumseh’s reputation among Americans has been both the most unique and anomalous. As the leader of the Shawnee, Tecumseh was the most famous Native American of the early 19th century, and he attempted to peacefully establish a Native American nation east of the Mississippi River in the wake of the American Revolution. While Native Americans, especially in the “Old Northwest” (present-day land west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Mississippi River), understood and recognized their own, long established territories and those of other tribes, these boundaries and territories were ignored and unappreciated by the incoming settlers.  
  	What makes Tecumseh’s legacy ironic is that the Shawnee were nominally led by a different man altogether, and that man just so happened to be Tecumseh’s brother. Lalawethika’s early life mostly consisted of abject failures, and he became an alcoholic, but in one of his alcohol-soaked stupors, he began to have visions of the Master of Life that turned him into the Open Door, the prophet named Tenskwatawa. It was Tenskwatawa who brought a new vision to the Shawnee, transforming himself from an object of pity and contempt into a religious leader who had thousands of followers. When the Americans fought at Tippecanoe, the gathering of Native Americans who they were attempting to disperse had congregated at a place colloquially known as Prophetstown.
