Summary

THE NAMES OF GOD we've looked at so far are Elohim, which in our Bibles is translated as "God," Jehovah, which is translated as "LORD," and "El-Shaddai," which is translated as "God Almighty" or "Almighty God." These names have been associated with God's Person—the power and glory of His Being, as in Elohim; His expression as a God of righteousness, holiness, love, and redemption, as in Jehovah; and as a beneficent and bountiful Bestower of powers, gifts, blessings, and fruitfulness for service, as in El-Shaddai. While these names do imply or demand that man conform to the Being in whose image he is created, the name under discussion in this chapter makes a clear demand for man's obedience and service.

In our Bibles, the name Adonai is translated as Lord, which is written in small letters with only the first letter capitalized. Adonai is a name for God that appears around 300 times in the Old Testament. It's noteworthy that it's almost always in the plural and possessive, implying "my Lords." It supports the concept of a trinity, which is also reflected in the name Elohim. This is further supported by the fact that the same word is used of men 215 times and is translated as "master," "sir," and "lord," but mostly "master," as in Genesis 24, 41 42, where Eliezer, Abraham's servant, speaks of "my master Abraham" and repeatedly says, "Blessed be Jehovah God of my master Abraham." It's also worth noting that the word "owner" is used to translate the same phrase Adonai several times. However, when it is applied to men, it is always in the singular form, adon. It is only in the plural because of God. "The Lord spoke unto my Lord," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adonai," or "Jehovah said unto my Adon "Sit on my right hand till I make thy foes thy footstool," says the narrator. This stunning chapter is referred to by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 22:41-45 (as well as Peter in Acts 2:34, 35; and Hebrews 1:13; 10:12, 13). How noteworthy, then, that David, speaking of only one part of the Trinity, uses the single word Adoni instead of the plural Adonai: "Jehovah said unto mine Adoni," that is, Christ, the second Person of the Trinity!

There is nothing more powerful than an idea. Ideas created and now controlled a thought; when a thought is conceived it is called a Concept. Concepts are the material that dreams are made of and they serve as substance for living and interpreting life. Perhaps this is what the great king Solomon meant when he wrote over 3,000 years ago, “as a man thinks so is he.” Psychologists describe our value and estimation of our life by the nature of our “self-concept.” Concepts rise in value as we consider our perception and interpretation of life. Human communication is solely dependent on concepts. In Fact, the purpose and goal of communication is to transfer our ideas and concepts from your mind to another mind. Therefore, communication is only successful when the sender’s concepts are received accurately and properly understood by the receiver and vice versa. Error is a product and result of what is called “misconception.” In reality the receiver misunderstood the concept of the sender.

"Here is catechesis at its best, instructing the student of theology, providing pastors with a sermon-enriching manual, and giving growing Christians a resource book that will both inform and nourish them, as well as provide endless theological enjoyment!"
—Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor's Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries
The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multivolume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach.
In this volume, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley unpack the work and role of the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology) and salvation (soteriology). The authors examine the Holy Spirit's role in the history of salvation, the order of salvation, and the believers' experience of salvation. As readers consider the interrelationship between the Spirit and salvation, they are invited to explore the direct activity of the Lord in their lives for their salvation.

The Church in the United States is greatly blessed by the contributions of Black Catholics and the legacy of holiness of so many men and women of color. These men and women lived lives that are worthy of our study and emulation.

In Black Catholics on the Road to Sainthood, Michael R. Heinlein provides the first book to explore the lives of the six Black Catholics from the United States whose causes are under formal consideration by the Catholic Church for canonization. Including biographies and personal reflections from diverse contributors, this book shows how these six men and women provide a model of holiness for all Catholics and people of good will. Venerable Pierre Toussaint, Venerable Henriette Delille, Venerable Father Augustus Tolton, Servant of God Mother Mary Lange, Servant of God Julia Greeley, and Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman are sources of inspiration for us all.

As we continue to pray for the advancement of their causes for canonization, all Catholics of every race can learn a great deal from these holy men and women. By their stories of faith and virtue, they show us how to respond to the call to holiness, bringing healing, reconciliation, and peace to our wounded nation and world.
