Summary

In "The Lenâpé and Their Legends," Daniel G. Brinton delves into the rich oral traditions and cultural tapestry of the Lenâpé people, a Native American tribe from the northeastern United States. Through the lens of ethnographic and anthropological exploration, Brinton employs a narrative style that intertwines lyrical storytelling with scholarly analysis, offering readers a profound insight into the myths, legends, and everyday lives of the Lenâpé. This work not only serves as a collection of folklore but also contextualizes their stories within the broader landscape of Indigenous narratives in America, revealing themes of harmony with nature, spirituality, and the human condition. Daniel G. Brinton was a pioneering anthropologist and linguist whose deep interest in Native American cultures and languages shaped his scholarly pursuits. His extensive travels and interactions with Indigenous communities informed his efforts to preserve their legacy, especially at a time when many were facing cultural erasure due to colonial influences. Brinton's unique position as both a scholar and a sympathetic observer allowed him to convey the wisdom and nuances of the Lenâpé traditions with authenticity and respect. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in Native American literature, folklore, and anthropology. Brinton's work is invaluable for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of Lenâpé culture, as well as for scholars and laypeople who appreciate the intricate relationship between narrative and identity in Indigenous communities.

The 61 poems in White Terror Black Trauma concentrate on some of the most traumatic events in Black history from colonial to contemporary times, from the arrival of enslaved Africans in 1619 to Black revolts, Civil War atrocities, incalculable lynchings, the Tulsa massacre, the brave sacrifices of Rosa Parks, the Freedom Riders, the heroes of school desegregation, the murders of Emmet Till, Dr. King, Fred Hampton, Malcolm X, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Eric Garner, and Tyre Nichols. And so many other Black tragedies.

Each poem here carries a brief head note identifying the person, place, time, or event that addresses the historical context of the poem. Some poems are written in a his/her recollection of the historical event. Above all, each poem highlights the topography of Black trauma, be that a Civil War fort, a lynching tree, a prison, a school, an island, a ghetto, a river, a national monument, a church, or city street. These resistance poems are chronicles, laments, petitions, heroic recollections about racial attacks on Black people in America.

Nearly 20 years before Jamestown was settled, the English established one of the earliest colonies in North America around the Chesapeake Bay region, until the colony had over 100 inhabitants. Like other early settlements, Roanoke struggled to survive in its infancy, to the extent that the colony’s leader, John White, sailed back to England in 1587 in an effort to bring more supplies and help. However, the attempts to bring back supplies were thwarted by the Spanish in the midst of the Anglo-Spanish War going on at the time, and it was not until 1590 that White reached Roanoke again.
What White found when he came back to Roanoke led to one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. Despite the fact he had left over 100 people in Roanoke in 1587, White returned to literally nothing, with all traces of the settlement gone and no evidence of fighting or anything else that might have explained the disappearance of the inhabitants. The fate of Roanoke has fascinated people for over 400 years, and there is no shortage of theories regarding the disappearance of the colony. In addition to the possibility that the settlers moved to Croatoan Island, most theories speculate that they were either wiped out by nearby Native Americans or assimilated among a tribe.
Jamestown is remembered today because the settlement did survive through the hardships and go on to serve as the capital of the English colony for much of the 17th century. At the same time, one of the biggest reasons for its survival and fame today can be attributed to the local Native Americans, particularly Pocahontas, who has added both a human and romanticized, mythological element to Jamestown. She was the daughter of the paramount chief (mamanatowick) Powhatan, leader of an Algonquian-speaking native group in eastern Virginia.

This short paper on logic argues that logic and science can go hand in hand, and that, by taking observations of perceptions and sensations, and applying logical analysis to them, you have the power to build conceptual models and frameworks that you can use in order to predict what you should do in the future and to reason how to solve the problems in your life. Examples from hard science, and examples of the use of science and logic in the courtroom to understand legal arguments, are presented, as well examples of how to figure out the answers to the mundane ordinary problems that we humans have in our lives.
Mandatory must-read for anyone who wants to think and live using logic.
