Summary

The History of the Pirates of the Caribbean offers a captivating journey through the tumultuous seas, where legendary figures and rogue adventure converge to craft a nuanced tableau of piracy. This anthology, rich in narrative diversity, unravels the seafaring and marauding lives in intricate detail, providing both historical accounts and vividly imagined tales. Encompassing a splendid blend of styles, the collection deftly navigates between factual recounting and swashbuckling folklore, capturing the chaotic allure and gritty realities of pirate life. Through its expansive range, it includes vivid storytelling that illuminates the daring escapades and complex social standings of pirates, without losing sight of their somber brutality, ensuring a multifaceted portrayal of a historically misunderstood era. The authors brought together for this anthology provide an impressive breadth of perspective. Daniel Defoe, an early pioneer of realism, enriches the collection with a nuanced understanding of human nature, while Charles Ellms contributes to the folkloric tradition of pirates. Captain Charles Johnson's often-debated true identity lends an air of mystery, bolstering the mythos surrounding many of his subjects. United, these voices delve into the socio-political dynamics of piracy during the Golden Age, offering a textured backdrop of colonial expansion, economic ambition, and lawless rebellion, reflective of broader historical and cultural undercurrents. This compilation serves as an invaluable resource for anyone yearning to explore a comprehensive and layered narrative of piracy. Readers are afforded a unique vantage point to experience the multiplicity of tales that range from captivating legend to historical fact. Its educational merit lies not only in its depth of historical insight but in the unique dialogue it fosters between diverse authorial voices, making The History of the Pirates of the Caribbean a compelling addition to both literary and historical study, as it invites readers to reflect deeply on the persistent human fascinations with freedom, power, and the high seas.

A deeply researched biography of the prominent and divisive writer Ayn Rand, whose pro-capitalist novels and nonfiction have influenced three generations of Americans

Biographer Alexandra Popoff traces the life and creative achievement of Ayn Rand (1905–1982), one of America’s most provocative writers and whose best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged have enjoyed impressive longevity. Born into a Jewish family in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Rand (then Alisa Rosenbaum) lived through the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, Civil War, and the onset of Soviet totalitarian dictatorships––experiences that made her profoundly anticommunist. When in 1926 Rand escaped from Stalinist Russia to realize her talent in America, she was also determined to expose the Communist system.

Through her apprenticeship in Hollywood, where she worked as a scriptwriter, to her first anti-Communist novel, We the Living, Rand doggedly pursued her goal, battling the Soviet belief system, along with its precepts of collectivism and statism. She defended American capitalism, individualism, prosperity, and creativity; her literary heroes were talented high achievers. While Marx had declared war on capitalism and prophesied the triumph of the proletariat, Rand, whose family was dispossessed by the Bolsheviks, glorified the wealth-creator and held the masses in contempt. In Atlas Shrugged, her most controversial novel, she promoted laissez-faire capitalism and the morality of rational self-interest. She envisaged apocalypse in America if it followed the socialist path.

Francis Marion Crawford was born on August 2nd, 1854 at Bagni di Lucca, Italy. An only son and a nephew to Julia Ward Howe, the American poet and writer of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.

His education began at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire, then to Cambridge University; University of Heidelberg; and the University of Rome.

In 1879 Crawford went to India, to study Sanskrit and then edited The Indian Herald. In 1881 he returned to America to continue his Sanskrit studies at Harvard University.

At this time in Boston he lived at his Aunt Julia house and in the company of his Uncle, Sam Ward. His family was concerned about his employment prospects. After a singing career as a baritone was ruled out, he was encouraged to write.

In December 1882 his first novel, ‘Mr Isaacs’, was an immediate hit which was amplified by ‘Dr Claudius’ in 1883.

In October 1884 he married Elizabeth Berdan. They went on to have two sons and two daughters.

Encouraged by his excellent start to a literary career he returned to Italy with Elizabeth to make a permanent home, principally in Sant' Agnello, where he bought the Villa Renzi that then became Villa Crawford.

In the late 1890s, he began to write his historical works: ‘Ave Roma Immortalis’ (1898), ‘Rulers of the South’ (1900) and ‘Gleanings from Venetian History’ (1905). The Saracinesca series is perhaps his best work. ‘Saracinesca’ was followed by ‘Sant’ Ilario’ in 1889, ‘Don Orsino’ in 1892 and ‘Corleone’ in 1897, that being the first major treatment of the Mafia in literature.

Francis Marion Crawford died at Sorrento on Good Friday 1909 at Villa Crawford of a heart attack.

Set in Italy, ‘For Blood is the Life’ draws us into a world usually beyond our senses. With Crawford’s pen the uneasy, horrific world of vampires is now upon us.
