Beschreibung

In "The Complete History of the Pirates (Illustrated)," Daniel Defoe embarks on a meticulously crafted narrative that delves into the fascinating and treacherous world of piracy during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Rich with vivid illustrations that complement his engaging prose, Defoe offers readers an insightful chronicle of notorious pirates, their exploits, and the societal conditions that birthed these rogues. The text serves as both a thrilling historical account and a moral reflection on the allure of rebellion against authority, illustrating the complexities of pirate life and its impact on maritime law and trade. Daniel Defoe, renowned for his pioneering contributions to the novel form, was deeply entrenched in the socio-political climate of his time, experiencing firsthand the shifting tides of commerce and colonialism. His experiences as a merchant and political pamphleteer provided him with a unique lens through which to examine the lives and motives of pirates, translating his observations into vivid storytelling. Defoe's extensive use of firsthand accounts and his flair for dramatization showcase his commitment to authenticity while entertaining his audience. This illustrated edition of Defoe's work is highly recommended for readers fascinated by maritime history, adventure literature, and the complexities of human motivation. It transcends mere biography, inviting readers to consider the moral ambiguities surrounding piracy while immersing them in a bygone era of danger and intrigue.

From May the 7th, in 1682 till his death in 1725, Peter the Great or Pyotr Alekséyevich governed the Tsardom of Russia and ultimately the Russian Empire, collectively ruling before 1696 with his older half-brother, Ivan V.He got ports on the Azov and Baltic Seas through a series of triumphant disputes, creating the structure for the Imperial Russian Navy, ending undisputed Swedish control in the Baltic, and launching the Tsardom's development into a much larger empire that would end up being a major European force. He was the leader of a cultural revolution that saw some standard and middle ages social and political structures changed with modern-day, clinical, Westernized, and Enlightenment-based systems. Peter's reforms had a long-lasting effect on Russia, and tons of the Russian federal government's organizations can be traced back to his reign. In 1721, he changed the former title of Tsar with the title of Emperor, and he created and broadened the city of Saint Petersburg, which stayed Russia's capital till 1917.Peter the Great has had a significance influence on the structure of Russia, the history, and the future in the succeeding decades after him. Let’s see what else he did while he was alive.

Lieutenant General James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, is one of the best-known figures of the war. Beginning as the commander of the 505th Parachute Combat Team that spearheaded the American assault on Sicily in July 1943, Gavin advanced to division command and finally command of US forces in Berlin. He kept a wartime diary that starts in April 1943, as the unit was preparing to go to northern Africa and continues through to his final entry on September 1, 1945, during the occupation of Berlin.

During the war years, Gavin came into close contact with virtually all the leading airborne commanders and many others who would advance to the top levels of Army leadership. His diary includes observations on fellow military and political leaders, army operations, and the general's personal life. Gavin was an officer who led by example: on four combat jumps, he was the first man out the door.

For decades, Gavin kept the existence of the journal a secret; the general's family discovered it among his belongings after his death. Editor Lewis "Bob" Sorley has worked closely with the Gavin family and the Army Heritage Center to prepare the diary for publication. His edited and annotated version includes a prologue and epilogue to frame the entries within the wider scope of the general's life.

The Marauders - Standing Up to...

This real-life Western tells the story of how citizens in a small Arizona border town stood up to anti-immigrant militias and vigilantes.

The Marauders uncovers the riveting nonfiction saga of far-right militias terrorizing the border towns of southern Arizona. In one of the towns profiled, Arivaca, rogue militia members killed a man and his nine-year-old daughter in 2009. In response, the residents organized and spent two years trying to push the new militias out through boycotts and by urging local businesses to ban them. The militias and vigilante groups again raised the stakes, spreading Pizzagate-style conspiracy theories alleging that town residents were complicit in child sex trafficking, prompting fears of vigilante violence.

The Marauders flips the standard formula most often applied to stories about immigration and the far right. Too often those stories are told from the perspective of the ones committing the violence. While Strickland doesn't shy away from exploring those dark themes, the far right are not the protagonists of the book. Rather, the people targeted by hate groups, and the individuals who rose up to stop them in their tracks, are the heroes of this dramatic story.
