  'Samson and Delilah' is set against a Cornish backdrop. Lawrence and his wife tried to settle in Cornwall during the First World War but were hounded by the authorities and forced to leave. Lawrence pointedly describes the local people as' mindless' in this story. It is almost a Homeric story of a husband returning home after a long absence, having to fight to regain his wife. But in this story it is the wife who is the obstacle. But she succumbs to the man's physical presence as Lawrence demanded all women should if they were to attain happiness.

  Washington Irvine’s tale of an awkward and lanky schoolmaster who comes to Sleepy Hollow is brought to life with sound effects and original thematic music. 
  Written in 1819, the short story is set in about 1790 and describes the events that unfold when Ichabod Crane comes to Sleepy Hollow to teach school in the small Dutch settlement. Ichabod is a firm believer of the tales of ghosts and witchcraft he has heard and read, including the local legend of the Headless Horseman who haunts the area. 
  As Ichabod begins to court Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, he incurs the rath of Brom Bones, a jealous rival for Katrina’s affections who often plays cruel tricks on the awkward schoolmaster. 
  Late one night as Ichabod rides home after a party at Katrina’s home, he comes face to face with the headless horseman and is never seen again.

  A Perplexing Case - From their...

  Henrietta Dorothy Huskisson was born in January 1851 in Gillingham, Kent. 
  Little reliable information on her life is available and almost nothing on her early life.   
  The first concrete information concerns her marriage at age 18 to the solicitor Isaac Edward Everett. 
  It was only at the age of 44 that she began her literary career under the pseudonym of Theo Douglas, a popular device in a society that still frowned upon women writing for income. 
  During her lifetime she was a popular author and wrote 22 books and those were published by 17 different publishers. 
  Although she wrote some historical novels her main output was centered on fantasy and supernatural themes. 
  Henrietta Dorothy Everett died in Weston-on-Trent in Derbyshire in September 1923.
