Summary

Moll Flanders is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1722, and its full original title is quite long:"The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, etc. Who was Born in Newgate, and during a Life of continued Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own Brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv’d Honest, and died a Penitent."Moll Flanders is the story of a clever and resourceful woman who, born in a prison (Newgate), struggles through poverty, marriages, love affairs, and criminal activity in 17th-century England. Throughout her life, she becomes a thief, a prostitute, and even unknowingly marries her own brother. Eventually, she is caught and transported to Virginia, where she turns her life around, finds success, and repents for her sins. The novel is told in the first person, as if Moll herself were narrating her memoirs, and it offers a fascinating view of crime, class, and gender in early 18th-century society.Daniel Defoe was an English writer, journalist, and trader, best known for pioneering the English novel. He is most famous for "Robinson Crusoe" (1719), one of the first major novels in English literature, and "Moll Flanders" (1722).He lived through a period of immense political, social, and economic change, and his works often blend realism, adventure, and moral reflection.

Part 3: My Shore Adventure from Treasure Island:
"For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, 'the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas.' G. S. Fraser terms it 'an utterly original book' and goes on to write: 'There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy.'

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

On that account there are some central thoughts which I should like to impress upon your minds this evening, and which I wish you to take with you into the world, whether you go out from the school as graduates or whether you go as undergraduates.
