Sinopse

In "Thoughts on Art and Life," Leonardo da Vinci provides an introspective exploration of the intersections between art, science, and the human experience. The book is a rich tapestry woven from da Vinci's numerous notebooks, presenting a collection of aphorisms, reflections, and insightful observations. Its literary style combines philosophical inquiry with practical insights, deftly reflecting the Renaissance spirit in which he lived. Through this work, da Vinci dissects the principles of beauty, technique, and emotional depth, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the foundational ideas that shaped Western artistic and intellectual traditions. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), a polymath whose genius spanned several disciplines, was profoundly aware of the interconnectedness of art and science. His relentless curiosity, commitment to empirical observation, and belief in the importance of nature shaped his creative outputs. The insights captured in this book not only showcase his artistic philosophies but also reveal the dynamics of a mind influenced by the scholarly debates and humanist ideals prevalent in the Renaissance period. "Thoughts on Art and Life" is highly recommended for both art enthusiasts and scholars alike. Whether you seek to deepen your understanding of artistic principles or to gain insight into a seminal figure in history, this book invites readers to contemplate the profound relationship between creation and existence.

Zimmerman's eyes is to be reminded of the many ways in which love, religion, family, sex, money—or often lack thereof—lay bare our most elemental and embarrassing humanness. From meditations on heartbreak to not-so-helpful how-tos, this laugh-and-cry-out-loud essay collection documents one person's navigation through queerness, climbing the corporate ladder, dating cryptocurrency-obsessed mansplainers, mourning the loss of religiosity, and all the minute, beautiful discoveries in between.

The Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) emerged after the collapse of the short-lived Sui Dynasty, which had failed due to internal strife, heavy taxation, and forced labor projects that drained the empire’s resources. The fall of the Sui created a power vacuum, allowing various factions to vie for control. Amid this turmoil, Li Yuan, a former Sui general, led a successful rebellion and established the Tang Dynasty in 618 CE, taking the throne as Emperor Gaozu. His leadership set the foundation for one of China’s most influential and prosperous dynasties.
Emperor Gaozu focused on stabilizing the empire by reforming the government, lowering excessive taxes, and restoring order to a nation weakened by years of misrule. However, his reign was relatively short-lived as his son, Li Shimin, proved to be a more capable leader. In 626 CE, Li Shimin forced his father to abdicate and took the throne as Emperor Taizong. His ascension marked the true consolidation of Tang power and the beginning of an era of expansion, reform, and cultural advancement.
Under Emperor Taizong’s rule, the Tang Dynasty established a strong centralized government based on Confucian principles. He refined the imperial examination system, ensuring that officials were chosen based on merit rather than birthright. This system allowed for the creation of a competent and efficient bureaucracy, which would become a hallmark of Tang governance. Additionally, Taizong worked to solidify China’s borders by engaging in strategic military campaigns. His army pushed westward into Central Asia, securing control over key trade routes and strengthening the empire’s influence along the Silk Road. These military victories, combined with diplomatic relations with neighboring states, positioned the Tang Dynasty as a dominant force in East Asia.

Father Charles Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s.
An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice.
In this recording, Coughlin first discusses Franklin D. Roosevelt, and then the consequences of World War I twenty years after.
