Summary

Sunny is the smallest of all seeds: a mustard seed. At the annual Seed Festival he meets Beano, a balloonist who offers him a test ride. He refuses, but in Beano’s departure, Sunny gets caught in one of the support ropes and has to be pulled into the balloon basket.

Before they can return, a storm takes them to an unknown world dominated by an evil seed, Enzo. There, they meet Sandtown, a scientist who once worked for Enzo, creating a serum designed to build an unstoppable army. But after an accident in the lab, the formula falls into the wrong hands and the SeedWhackers - supercharged warriors - are born.

Sunny and his newfound allies form The Seed Gang. Their mission: repair Beano’s balloon, rescue Sandtown, and stop Enzo. But can a tiny seed with oversized feet and a band of misfits take down an enemy this powerful?

A fast-paced tale of good versus evil, D.A. Maxson's THE SEED GANG is a thrilling adventure for younger and older readers alike.

For her sixth birthday, animal-loving Alicia is given her first pet, a guinea pig she names Annie. But while Alicia is making a vegetable-fruit cake for Annie's birthday, Annie disappears. Where is she? Alicia can hear her younger brother and sister – the dynamic duo, Jackson and Jillian – arguing in the bathroom. AND, she hears squeaking. Will Alicia be able to avert a near-disaster and make sure Annie stays safe? "Alicia and Annie" is written for read-aloud and for early readers. A healthy recipe, and interactive questions to promote memory recall and emotional intelligence are included. ABOUT THE THREE BOOK SERIES: I was in my classroom when a student asked, “I wonder what my sister is doing right now?” The student’s question made me think about a child’s emerging concept of time: that of being aware of life happening elsewhere, outside of the child’s own experience. Each book in the Sapphire Family Series is told from a different point of view: that of the twins, in "Jackson and Jillian," their older sister, Alicia in "Alicia and Annie," and big brother, Mason in "Mason and Invincible Igor." All three books take place during the same period of time, early evening. Although the books can stand alone, read together they offer a three-dimensional exploration of sibling interactions and family dynamics. Reading a story from different points of view is a first step in thinking beyond oneself. My intention is that the Sapphire Family Series will offer children compelling characters with whom they can identify and grow, and present positive, realistic family dynamics that will delight them.

A sweetly humorous middle grade novel packed with action, basketball, and a dash of magical realism about friendship and family, first crushes, and belonging, from acclaimed author Gary Soto.
Thirteen-year-old Jordan Mendoza has a huge crush on his classmate, Sierra, but he’s never going to win her affections if he stays a C student and keeps embarrassing himself on the basketball court. And it doesn’t help that his best friend, Antonio, likes to tease him about it all a little too much.
But when Jordan dives into the waters of a dangerous irrigation canal to save a drowning puppy, he’s suddenly got even more on his mind than kissing Sierra and making the starting team. Can he nurse the abandoned puppy back to health (and will his parents let him keep her)? Who threw her into the canal—and is it possible that there are more puppies needing rescue? And why are the cops suddenly at Jordan’s door, looking for him?
There’s something for every reader in this story’s mix of humor, sports, themes of thrilling independence, subtle strands of magical realism, and timely social commentary, all held together by a sweet and satisfying emotional core.
