Summary

I found the representative of a great British journal in a difficulty. It was his hard task to gather news of several Balkan states, which one and all seemed determined to set about making history at the same moment. Crete was already ablaze; a Macedonian war was promised by Greece, and Bulgaria moved restlessly behind her frontier. Who knew what the others would hazard on flank and rear? I could speak fair Greek. Would I help him by undertaking Crete? It need not be for long. The Powers would soon make its peace, and deport the Greek soldiers who had just landed under the very guns of our ships. His actual correspondent, a Greek, was colouring his despatches to London white and blue. Would I replace him awhile? My temptation was brief. I had never been in Crete, and a scholar may rarely watch war.
I had not long to wait for it. As we drew to our anchorage inside the warships off Canea there were houses to be seen afire two miles inshore and rifles spitting up and down the slopes behind the town. The Turks had thought to revictual their threatened lines in peace during the hour of the Sunday office; but priests and people came out of church to fight. It was a small and desultory affair, from which less than a score of killed and wounded men were borne back at evening to the gates—patient Anatolian peasants for the most part, who had long served out their due time and fought without heat or reasoning why. Along with them came the corpses of two or three bashibazuk Cretans, Greek in feature and Greek in speech, Moslems by chance and all but ignorant of the faith which they had died to uphold. They were the first men slain in anger that I had seen.

    ARRIVAL
    THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA COLLECTION

FROM THE MOVIE DIRECTED BY DENIS VILLENEUVE

    CREATED BY FILM TRIVIA METAVERSE

    ABOUT THE FILM
Arrival is a 2016 science fiction drama directed by Denis Villeneuve. The film follows linguist Dr. Louise Banks, portrayed by Amy Adams, who is recruited by the U.S. military to help communicate with extraterrestrial beings after twelve mysterious spacecraft land on Earth. As Louise and physicist Ian Donnelly, played by Jeremy Renner, attempt to decipher the aliens' complex, non-linear language, they grapple with global tensions and the potential consequences of contact. The film explores themes of language, time, memory, and the nature of human perception, offering a deeply philosophical take on communication and the possibility of future connections.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“Director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created a fully functioning, visual alien language. They developed a 'logogram bible,' which included over a hundred different fully operative logograms, seventy-one of which are featured in the movie.”

“The circular alien language was created by Montreal artist Martine Bertrand. The artist's son also created Hannah's drawings.”

“While the shape of the alien ship was decided early on, Denis Villeneuve had difficulty imagining an interior that would allow humans to navigate such a steep and vertical design. The decision to turn gravity sideways was made as a solution.”

“Ted Chiang, the author of the story on which the film is based, approved of the movie. He stated, 'I think it's that rarest of the rare in that it's both a good movie and a good adaptation.'”

At the dawn of the twentieth century, José Cuervo inherited his family's humble distillery, La Rojeña, in the Tequila Valley. Within a decade, it would become Mexico's leading producer of tequila. But when the Mexican Revolution erupted, a charge of treason and a death threat against him by Pancho Villa forced Cuervo to flee. His disappearance turned him into an obscure, shadowy historical figure.

In Tequila Wars, award-winning author Ted Genoways restores Cuervo to his place as a key player in Mexico's formative period. Before the revolution, Cuervo's acclaim spread worldwide, and once war broke out, Cuervo remained an impresario, kingmaker, and cultural force. In the face of his own government's corruption and the nationalism of his northern neighbors, Cuervo reached American drinkers by establishing Mexico’s covert form of cross-border commerce with the United States. As the largest and most important distilleries in the Tequila Valley recognized the threat posed by Mexico's unraveling, Cuervo also lobbied for suspending normal competition in favor of "a union of tequila makers"—what would become the first Mexican cartel.

The first biography of Cuervo, Tequila Wars uncovers the history of the man who would forever change not only the business of tequila, but international relations between Mexico and the United States.
