Summary

What you will find in these pages is nothing more than a path of thoughts, a collection of emotions and sensations that often arrive suddenly, unexpectedly. Sometimes, in fact, an image, a piece of news, a music, a sound or simply the tone of a voice is enough to make some memories pop up into our minds, it is able to recall important moments, forgotten emotions. This is why I decided to write down some of them, so that they don't get lost in time. After all, we live only for emotions. Those emotions that create pure energy, that make you dream and love without asking for anything in return.

Out of the Shadow of Silence follows the tumultuous journey of a woman thirsting for love against a backdrop of adversity. In this epic rescue mission, God's love challenges the power of abusive behaviors and self-destruction mechanisms. We watch attentively as God's tender mercies meet each desperation with an abundance of peace. We discover the scope of His love and patience, remaining steadfast until every wound is healed and all darkness has been displaced by light.
Perhaps you may wonder why I have chosen to write this intro in the third person. Please allow me to explain. My name is Pastor Marilyn Marrero, and this is my story. Despite the fact that I am narrating this true account of my life, the woman you are about to meet is no longer in existence. Even as I write most of the pages of this book, she is unrecognizable to me, nothing more than a distant memory.
My deepest hope and prayer is that the same love that rescued me from Out of the Shadows of Silence would bring you into the marvelous light, where old things are made new, and you too can realize the beauty and freedom found in your God-given identity.

    Surf Like a Woman

In the 80s and 90s, surf culture was toxic, especially towards women. But Pauline Menczer - a dirt-poor, chronically ill, freckle-faced teen from Bondi - defied insults and intimidation to ride the waves. The reason: she simply loved to surf.

But when Pauline's determination propelled her onto the pro circuit, her battle for acceptance and equality didn't end there. The endemic sexism of the industry meant prize money for women was a pittance, while sponsors ignored her because she was a lesbian and didn't have the beach babe look.

Despite these challenges, Pauline became the 1993 World Champion and played a key role in bringing greater equality to the sport. This is the inspirational story of a true underdog battler, whose fearlessness and grit broke down the door of surfing's boys' club for the next generation of women.

Sinkhole - The Legacy of a Suicide

A sublimely elegant, fractured reckoning with the legacy and inheritance of suicide in one American family. This stunning elegy that vividly enacts Emily Dickinson’s dictum to “tell it slant,” Sinkhole richly layers personal, familial, political, and environmental histories to provide not answers but essential, heartbreaking truth. In 2009, Juliet Patterson was recovering from a serious car accident when she learned her father had died by suicide. His death was part of a disturbing pattern in her family. Her father’s father had taken his own life; so had her mother’s. Over the weeks and months that followed, grieving and in physical pain, Patterson kept returning to one question: Why? Why had her family lost so many men, so many fathers, and what lay beneath the silence that had taken hold?In three graceful movements, Patterson explores these questions. In the winter of her father’s death, she struggles to make sense of the loss—sifting through the few belongings he left behind, looking to signs and symbols for meaning. As the spring thaw comes, she and her mother depart Minnesota for her father’s burial in her parents’ hometown of Pittsburg, Kansas. A once-prosperous town of promise and of violence, against people and the land, Pittsburg is now literally undermined by abandoned claims and sinkholes. There, Patterson carefully gathers evidence and radically imagines the final days of the grandfathers—one a fiery pro-labor politician, the other a melancholy businessman—she never knew. And finally, she returns to her father: to the haunting subjects of goodbyes, of loss, and of how to break the cycle.
