Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to fascinate even today, more than 200 years after his death. His legacy is shown in beautiful paintings.
He was an unrivalled general, although he did make occasional mistakes both on the tactical and the strategic level -the most significant was his attack on Russia, which annihilated most of his Grande Armée and led to his downfall.
Napoleon institutionalized plunder and destruction in a way mostly only known by more primitive invaders. Both he and his generals and soldiers stole incredible amounts of cultural property and wantonly destroyed much more
Napoleon did leave some durable institutions on which modern France is built up, including the Napoleonic Code, the judicial system, the central bank and the country's financial organization, military academies, and a centralized university.

We hope the readers will enjoy our selection and the activity. We hope it will contribute to a better understanding of Napoleon, his time and of art itself.

The Temples of Egypt - Sacred...

Temples in ancient Egypt were far more than mere places of worship. They stood at the very heart of Egyptian civilization, functioning as both spiritual centers and instruments of political and social order. Each temple was seen as a dwelling place for a god or goddess, and the rituals performed within their walls were believed to maintain the cosmic balance known as ma’at. The presence of a temple in a city or region signaled divine favor and legitimacy, reinforcing the bond between the gods and the ruling pharaoh.
Pharaohs were considered divine intermediaries between the gods and the people, and their authority was deeply rooted in religious belief. Temples were a direct reflection of this divine connection. Often constructed by pharaohs to honor specific deities, temples helped assert royal power and ensure harmony across the land. Through grand architecture and lavish offerings, rulers demonstrated their piety and reaffirmed their right to govern. This link between kingship and temple worship made temples central to the ideological framework of the state.
Beyond their religious significance, temples also played a pivotal role in the social life of ancient Egyptians. They were the sites of numerous festivals and ceremonial events that brought entire communities together. These occasions were marked by processions, music, dancing, and the display of sacred statues, all of which reinforced communal identity and devotion. The most prominent of these was the Opet Festival in Thebes, during which statues of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were transported from Karnak to Luxor Temple in a public procession along the Nile. Such festivals reminded people of the gods’ presence and the pharaoh’s divine role in upholding order.

The Shy Assassin - The Inspiring...

One of the few RAF aircrew to play a central part in two of the Second World War's most momentous events, the Battle of Britain and D-Day, Cyril 'Frank' Babbage was a survivor. He wasn't just an immensely skilled pilot; he was also blessed with extraordinary good fortune.

Babbage's image shot to national prominence in late-August 1940, briefly becoming the face of 'The Few'. Photographs appeared in the press of him stepping out of a rowing boat on Bognor beach. There he was met by a small crowd who'd seen him rescued by fishermen after bailing out. He'd been shot down by a German fighter, but only after disposing of another one first. Babbage's fascinating wartime experiences are complimented brilliantly by the stories of those who crossed his path, famous names like Amy Johnson and Douglas Bader as well as countless other unsung heroes. Many of the latter were youngsters he served with all too briefly.Between his contrasting operational tours Babbage spent time as a flying instructor, insulated to a degree against the ravages of war. Wing Commander C. F. Babbage DFM, AE retired in the summer of 1964. Like so many of his ilk, he owed his final years of peacetime service to the sacrifices of others—others like those brave men with whom he flew, but who enjoyed less than their own share of good luck.
