Summary

In "The Germany and the Agricola of Tacitus," the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus presents a penetrating examination of the Germanic tribes and a biographical account of his father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman governor of Britain. Written in the early second century CE, these texts employ a concise yet profound literary style, combining vivid descriptive imagery with incisive commentary. Tacitus contrasts the primitive virtues of the Germanic peoples, perceived as noble and unsullied by luxury, with the moral decay of Roman civilization, thus engaging in a subtle critique of imperialism and cultural corruption. This dichotomy underscores the themes of valor and savagery, revealing insights into both the barbaric and civilized worlds of antiquity. Tacitus, born around 56 CE into a prominent Roman family, was deeply influenced by a political climate marked by tyranny and corruption, particularly during the reign of the Emperor Domitian. His heightened sense of moral integrity and desire for historical justice permeate his writings, prompting a thorough analysis of the dynamics between Rome and the cultures on its fringes. Such experiences provided Tacitus with a unique perspective, allowing him to navigate complex cultural narratives with both empathy and critical distance. Readers of history, literature, or anthropology will find "The Germany and the Agricola" an invaluable resource, offering rich insights into the socio-political dynamics of Rome and its provinces. Tacitus's eloquent prose invites readers to not only witness but also reflect upon the cultural complexities of the ancient world, making this work a timeless classic still relevant in contemporary discourse.

In the first edition of A Country Called Prison, Mary Looman and John Carl presented persuasive data calling for downsizing of America's prisons. Their novel approach continues in their second edition, shifting the beliefs many people have about prisons and their role in the American society. Since the original edition was published, the landscape of incarceration has been changing.

In their second edition, Carl and Looman discuss the significant world events, such as the COVID epidemic, that impacted the American society in the past decade, which lead to an overall twenty percent reduction in prison populations across the board. The second edition includes a new chapter covering the history of prisons that clearly establishes the fact that prisons have always been about making money and less about rehabilitating offenders. They also introduce the new era of decarceration and desistance, encouraging courts to defer sentences and keep minor offenders at home with their families and in their communities while they work, attend education classes, and receive mental health treatment. Once again Carl and Looman end their book with a rational and daring proposal—Marshall Plan 2024—that envisions a way to bring the criminal justice system into the twenty-first century focusing on social equity and humane compassion for those who want to emigrate out.

While the Moors have always been associated with Spain due to their lengthy stay on the Iberian Peninsula, the most famous battle they were involved in was actually fought in modern France. While the Franks were consolidating a kingdom there, Muslim forces were pushing out of North Africa and into the Iberian Peninsula in the early 8th century, and by the dawn of the 730s, the Umayyad dynasty had expanded its territory from the Atlantic to the Pyrenees, a series of seasonally snow-capped mountains in Europe that forms a border between the nations of Spain and France. This would lead to Charles Martel’s most famous military victory came at the Battle of Tours, also called the Battle of Poitiers, on October 10, 732. At this battle, a united Frankish force decisively defeated the invading Umayyad Caliphate, making it one of the most important in all the Middle Ages for stemming the advancement of the Islamic forces in Europe.
Charles Martel was the forefather of the Carolingian dynasty, which carved out a major empire in Europe from 750-887, ushered in an important period in the Early Middle Ages. The Carolingians were in their time seen as the successors of ancient Rome in the West, and while they sought to reestablish the glory of antiquity, they’re remembered today for effectively founding the states that would become France and Germany. The Carolingians are also credited with creating the first Renaissance, the Carolingian Renaissance, centuries before the Italian Renaissance. Many of the great Latin classics survive today because of copies made during this period. In addition, the revisions made to written script at this time made texts easier to read, so much so that most of those changes remain in the modern system of writing.

‘You think you’ve married a journalist, then, horrors, he becomes a politician.'
'Sarah Vine is the Bridget Jones of politics.' Plum Sykes
'Everyone in Westminster is talking about it.' The London Standard
'I take it all back; she's fabulous. Nobody in Westminster can afford not to buy this book.' Rachel Johnson
‘Moving and heartfelt – what a journey. I’m amazed she’s still standing.’ Imogen Edwards-Jones
How Not to Be a Political Wife is an unflinching account of life at the heart of politics, and what it's like to have politics rip the heart out of your life. It’s a story of high hopes and dirty tricks, broken friendships and divided loyalties, laughter and glamour.
Recollections, as a great woman once said, may of course vary, but this is my story, the way I remember it, written with no fear, no favour – and no fucks left to give.
    Buckle up.
I thought long and hard about writing this memoir. I’ve done so not to settle old scores or plead my case, but more because I hope it’s a tale worth telling, not just for those who are interested in the political events of the past few years, but also because it’s about the people and characters behind those events, and why things ended up the way they did.
For nearly 20 years I was inside the rooms of government, a sanctioned eavesdropper on the rise – and fall – of the Cameroon style of Conservatism. At the same time I was building a career in journalism, raising two children and doing my best to support my own husband, Michael Gove, on his political journey. I was both an insider and an outsider; an observer – via my journalism – as well as a participant in the cut and thrust (mainly cut, if I’m honest) of frontline politics.
After my divorce from Michael and the demise of the Conservatives’ Old Guard, that all came to an end. I’m no longer officially a Westminster WAG, but you won’t find me mourning. Politics trampled my health, my happiness, my marriage, my sanity; it placed intolerable pressure on my loved ones, especially my children; it twisted my sense of self, and others’ sense of me; it tainted everything I did or said. I can’t say I miss it. I do, however, miss the life and the relationships I had before it all. These are the recollections of a survivor, but they are also a love letter to all that was lost in the wreck.
In her latest memoir, Sarah Vine, the Sunday Times bestselling author, gives us an insider's view of the political process. This is not just a biography, but a story of campaigns, elections, and the personal toll they take.
