Sinopsis

Hausa City Networks explores the fascinating story of the Hausa city-states in pre-colonial Africa, focusing on their interconnectedness rather than viewing them as isolated entities. The book argues that the strength of these states stemmed from a flexible network that fostered both collaboration and competition, driving economic growth and cultural exchange. Intriguingly, the Hausa states maintained a thriving economic and cultural landscape despite not being centrally controlled. This book provides a crucial understanding of pre-colonial political and economic systems, challenging Eurocentric views of state formation.

The book’s approach is threefold: analyzing the structure of Hausa governance, the dynamics of Hausa commerce, and the strategies of regional diplomacy. For instance, the Hausa city-states developed complex trade routes and market systems that made them a major economic power in West Africa. It unfolds in three parts, beginning with historical context, then dissecting internal structures, and finally examining external relations, offering a fresh perspective on decentralized governance and regional diplomacy.

Joe Biden has found his way back to Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. After four decades of diminishing prospects for ordinary people, the public likes what Biden is offering. Yet American democracy is in dire peril as Republicans, increasingly the national minority, try to destroy democracy in order to cling to power. It is the best of times and the worst of times. In Going Big, bestselling author and political journalist Robert Kuttner assesses the promise and peril of this critical juncture.

Biden, like FDR in his time, faces multiple challenges. Roosevelt had to make terrible compromises with racist legislators to win enactment of his program. Biden, to achieve the necessary governing coalition, needs to achieve durable multiracial coalitions. Roosevelt had to conquer fascism in Europe; Biden must defeat it at home. And after four decades of neoliberal policy disasters reflecting Wall Street's political influence, Biden needs to go beyond what even FDR achieved, to restore a democratic economy of broad possibility.

From a writer with an unparalleled understanding of the history and politics that have made this moment possible, this book is the essential guide to what is at stake for Joe Biden, for America, and for our democracy.

    Cherokee Civil Warrior - Chief...

John Ross served the Cherokee Nation in a public capacity for nearly fifty years, thirty-eight as its constitutionally elected principal chief. Historian W. Dale Weeks describes Ross's efforts to protect the tribe's interests amid systematic attacks on indigenous culture throughout the nineteenth century. At the outset of the Civil War, Ross called for all Cherokees to remain neutral in a war they did not support—a position that became untenable when the US withdrew its forces from Indian Territory. The vacated forts were quickly occupied by Confederate troops, who pressured the Cherokees to align with the South.

Viewed from the Cherokee perspective, these events can be seen in their proper context, as part of the history of US "Indian policy," failed foreign relations, and the Anglo-American conquest of the American West. This approach also clarifies President Lincoln's acknowledgment of the federal government's abrogation of its treaty obligation and his commitment to restoring political relations with the Cherokees—a commitment abruptly ended when Andrew Johnson sought to punish the Cherokees for their perceived disloyalty.

Centering a Native point of view, this book recasts and expands what we know about John Ross, the Cherokee Nation, its commitment to maintaining its sovereignty, and the Civil War era in Indian Territory.

The following are the live recordings of William Butler Yeats reading and discussing the inspiration behind three of his most famous poems, "The Lake Island of Innisfree," "The Fiddler of Dooney," and "Song of the Old Mother." Yeats made these three recordings in 1932, 1934, and on October 28, 1937 when he was 72.

"The Lake Island of Innisfree" is a twelve-line poem comprising three quatrains, written in 1888 and first published in the National Observer in 1890. The poem is featured in Irish passports. "The Fiddler of Dooney" was first published in 1892. The word "Dooney" refers to Dooney Rock, a small hill overlooking Lough Gill near Sligo. The central theme of poem is the celebration of life and the joy that comes from living it to the fullest. "Song of the Old Mother" first appeared in The Wind Among the Reeds anthology, published in 1899. Written in first person, the poem echoes Yeats' fascination with the Irish peasantry, explaining the difficult chores and struggles of an aged, unfortunate woman.
