Synopsis

“Erotic Constraints” explores why societies across the globe heavily police and regulate erotic content, going beyond simple moral arguments to examine the institutional and structural factors at play. The book argues that these constraints are significantly shaped by power dynamics seeking to control narratives around sexuality, gender, and the body. Did you know that economic limitations imposed on the erotic entertainment industry can reinforce cultural biases? Or that laws can stifle economic innovation in this sector? The book investigates this complex web of constraints across three interconnected areas: the legal frameworks, the economic forces, and the socio-cultural norms. It progresses from introducing core concepts to analyzing the legal and political landscape, then delves into economic factors and socio-cultural norms, presenting evidence from legal case studies, economic data, and sociological research. This approach allows the book to challenge simplistic explanations of erotic censorship, offering a nuanced understanding of its root causes and far-reaching consequences for freedom of expression and gender equality.

A provocative account of how our legal culture is holding us hostage—and what we need to do to change it.

The American government is broken. The country that built the national highway system and created Social Security and Medicare can now barely manage the basics. What went wrong?

University of Michigan Law professor Nicholas Bagley argues that America’s obsessively legalistic approach to governance—our “procedure fetish”—has strangled progress. Beginning in the late 1960s, reformers concerned about reckless postwar development crafted rules and procedures to minimize social and environmental harm from government action. These reformers had the best of intentions. Their obsession, however, has now grown into a legal regime that prioritizes process over outcomes, stasis over progress, and lawsuits over results. It’s time to stop assuming that well-intentioned procedures are good because they’re well-intentioned, and instead think hard about how to make our institutions genuinely effective. With deep insider knowledge, incisive analysis, and fluid storytelling, Why We Can’t Have Nice Things identifies a fatal flaw in American governance—and our potential path forward.

"Falling in love usually happens when you least expect it. But love isn't the only thing that happens without warning."
Lexi saw him for the first time in the fourth-floor pediatric cancer clinic. He was tall, handsome, and had a full head of dark hair-nothing like the little kids she was used to meeting during her routine hospital visits. No, Ricky was wholly unexpected. He stared at her, mesmerized by her stunning blue eyes. She looked at him carefully, wondering what his motivation for hanging out in a cancer clinic could be. He smiled confidently, unbothered by her bald scalp. Lexi softly returned the smile. Neither of them aware how this moment would entwine them forever.
In a beautiful and heartwarming true story, author Emily Gould weaves the narrative of her daughter's incredible life. The story of Lexi and Ricky begins with a chance meeting but grows into a perfect tale of real teenage romance, the good and the ugly of cancer treatments, and the inspiring power of love overcoming all odds.

Learn more about the history of those countries. The topics addressed will be the following:
The Khmer Empire--Historians describe Cambodia as the Khmer State or the Angkorian Empire (Khmer:) from the 9th century to the 15th century, when it was a Hindu/Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. The empire, which developed from the old societies of Funan and Chenla, governed and/or "vassalized" the majority of mainland Southeast Asia and parts of Southern China, covering from the suggestion of the Indochinese Peninsula northward to modern-day Yunnan province in China, and from Vietnam westward to Myanmar. The Khmer Empire was greater at its peak than the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) that existed at the exact same period.
The Siamese-- Siam was just a much different name for what's now referred to as Thailand. The Siamese are the people who live there, though they're never ever called as such any longer.
Thailand is a fascinating country, with its own culinary arts, culture, history, royalty, infrastructure, and influence on the world. To learn more about these “Thai” people before they were called Thai, when they were Siamese, is to learn about those people’s roots.

'Tony Rogers consistently reveals new material regarding WW2 operations, in this case with the captivating account of an LRDG hero.' —Ex-Lance-corporal X, QGM, author of The SAS and LRDG Roll of Honour, 1941-47

John Olivey, an officer in the Long Range Desert Group, saw action in the Western Desert, where he was awarded the Military Cross; he fought in the Dodecanese, for which he was decorated a second time; and saw active service on mainland Greece, and in Istria. In autumn 1943, he was deployed to the Aegean and in October tasked with leading 'Olforce' in an ill-conceived operation to take the island of Levitha. Of some fifty LRDG, he was one of only seven to avoid capture. During the battle for Leros in November, he commanded X2 Patrol at Clidi, a key hilltop position. After British forces on Leros capitulated, Olivey was taken prisoner.

While being marched through Athens with hundreds of other prisoners of war, he escaped. Aided by local residents, Olivey remained in hiding in German-occupied Athens. It would be more than four months before he was at last able to return to Allied territory. During this time, he wrote a compelling, brutally honest, and often amusing personal account, describing his involvement in what was an eventful and momentous chapter in the history of the LRDG. This is his story.
