Summary

Monks Lives explores the captivating world of monasticism, revealing the daily existence, spiritual practices, and intellectual contributions of monks across diverse traditions and eras. Monastic life, often romanticized, involved rigorous discipline and played a pivotal role in preserving knowledge, art, and providing social welfare. The book argues that monasticism is a unique social structure, contrary to being isolated, monks actively engaged with society through scholarship, creativity, and charity.

The book begins by laying out monasticism's core principles, such as vows and communal structures. It then examines monks' daily routines, their spiritual practices like prayer and contemplation, and the intellectual contributions monks made to theological doctrines and artistic masterpieces. Readers gain insight into how monasteries functioned as early centers for social welfare, offering aid to the poor and sick, and how monks dedicated their lives to prayer and contemplation.

Monks Lives provides a comparative perspective on monasticism, moving beyond Western traditions to include Buddhist, Hindu, and other communities. This approach allows readers to understand the nuanced differences and commonalities in monastic practices globally, offering a deeper understanding of how monastic principles might still offer insights into community, sustainability, and spiritual fulfillment today.

The mythology of the Norsemen is a tapestry woven with gods, giants, heroes, and creatures, shaping the beliefs and culture of the Viking Age. Rooted in oral tradition, these stories were passed down through generations, evolving over time yet retaining their essence. Norse myths explain the creation of the world, the forces that govern existence, and the inevitable fate that awaits all beings, including the gods themselves. Unlike many mythologies that depict their deities as all-powerful, Norse mythology embraces the concept of struggle, destiny, and the impermanence of even the mightiest figures.

At the heart of Norse mythology is a pantheon of gods divided into two main groups: the Aesir and the Vanir. The Aesir, led by Odin, are associated with war, wisdom, and governance, while the Vanir, including Freyja and Njord, are linked to fertility and prosperity. Though originally at odds, these two factions eventually united, reflecting the Viking worldview of balance between opposing forces. Alongside these deities are powerful figures such as Loki, the trickster, and the Norns, who weave the fates of gods and men alike.

The Norse cosmos is structured around Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which connects the Nine Realms. These include Asgard, the home of the gods; Midgard, the realm of humans; and Hel, the domain of the dead. This vast and interconnected universe embodies the Viking understanding of life as an intricate web of cause and effect, where fate is both inescapable and deeply intertwined with personal action.

The progress of the human race has been haphazard and inefficient with too much left to chance. We have been wasteful with our time, resources, and human effort. We have suffered unnecessarily with pointless wars and with billions still in poverty today. And now, our very existence is threatened by multiple Global Catastrophic Risks – from climate change and nuclear war, to AI and pandemics. But the global ‘order’ of today shows no chance of being able to solve and effectively coordinate the global responses so critically required to ensure the future of humanity. This is not good enough. It is far too soon for us to end. Our future, our potential as a species – we must protect and realise it.
This book explores what the human race could achieve with true global cooperation.
In this book are the Blueprints for the New World – with the global systems and institutions of the world re-engineered and re-designed to solve the global problems of today. To create the most prosperous Future of the Human Race. It explores the benefits of achieving global demilitarisation, a true global economy centred around Value creation and not consumerism, a new global currency and global language. The ability to effectively respond to global emergencies and threats, accelerating scientific progress through restructuring academia, global infrastructure projects such as a global electricity grid. True global justice crippling evil across the entire world. Reforming the global education system. Long term planning for the benefit of the entire human race. A global space agency to establish our foothold in space as fast as possible. And more.
No more should humanity blindly stumble forward into the future. It is time we finally took a firm hold of and controlled the destiny of the human race.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 9 by Dr. Helmuth Klar, 'How to Teach Buddhism to Children' found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. I, narrated by Christa Michel.

    Excerpt:

"...How can Buddhist parents best teach their own children Buddhism? since they will seldom have the opportunity to teach it to other children, let alone the children of non-Buddhist parents. As I do not wish to theorize, I shall speak only from practical experience with my own children, and so of Western children in general. It is moreover particularly the Western child which is exposed to a Christian or materialistic environment, and hence is in need of a carefully considered Buddhist education. In a Buddhist country, steeped in its centuries-old Buddhist tradition, the position of a Buddhist child is (or should be) far easier. In such a favourable environment a good and effective Buddhist educational system may have developed. But even if it had it would be a great mistake for us, as Westerners, to copy it without due consideration.
