Summary

Clothespin Grips Tight explores the surprisingly significant history of the spring clothespin, a seemingly simple device that revolutionized domestic life. From its humble beginnings as a forked stick to David M. Smith's pivotal 1853 patent, the book traces the technological evolution and social impact of this ubiquitous laundry aid. The study of something as commonplace as a clothespin offers insight into broader themes of industrial design, consumer culture, and even the changing roles of women as laundry transitioned from a laborious, weather-dependent chore to a more manageable task. The book examines how laundry practices evolved and how the clothespin became a reflection of broader industrial advancements. Patent records, trade catalogs, and oral histories shed light on the mechanics of clothespin design, its spread into the consumer market, and its cultural significance. The book progresses chronologically, beginning with pre-industrial laundry practices, detailing the proliferation of varied clothespin designs and materials, and culminating in an exploration of the clothespin's continued relevance in the 21st century. Through a narrative non-fiction approach, Clothespin Grips Tight argues that the clothespin provides a valuable lens through which to examine the development of mass production and its ongoing relevance in the face of modern technologies like electric dryers.

Indiana-born Vivian Gordon fluttered to New York in 1920 looking for fame and fortune. Before long, the flame-haired chorus girl parlayed her youth, beauty, and ambition into more profitable means as a tough and glamorous symbol of Prohibition-era excess. She was a speakeasy owner, blackmailer, high-end escort, extortionist, racketeer, and con woman. But given her dangerously intimate associations, Vivian was also a woman who knew too much and who rightfully feared for her life.

On February 26, 1931, Vivian's bludgeoned and garroted body was found dumped in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Now, in the first in-depth biography of its kind, Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award-winning journalist Anthony M. DeStefano unravels her tumultuous life and the headline-making murder that became an obsession for many.

The evidence Vivian left behind was damning: a diary with more than three-hundred names implicating powerful officials, philanthropists, businessmen, and every major gangland figure in collusion and corruption. The investigation eventually resulted in the career-ending of James "Jimmy" Walker, disgraced mayor of New York City. Broadway Butterfly finally finds a place in history for Vivian, a woman with a rare legacy in gangster lore, whose demise was as tragically inevitable as the brutality of the city's demimonde during Prohibition.

BURNOUT DIARIES is the gritty, personal account of Janna Donovan, a marketing manager who found herself battling burnout in a foreign country. It details the distrust, shame, and secrecy that eventually led to panic events, depression, and plans for suicide.

The story reads more like a novel than a business book. It’s funny and tragic and “Did she really go there?” rolled into one fascinating true story. Based on Janna Donovan’s personal diaries, it is different from other business stress books. The author outs herself, broken heart and all.
Janna is a business manager who has worked for a multinational company, a .com startup, and a retailer. She now helps individuals with high amounts of work stress and worry. She became a therapist, after seeing firsthand what anxiety disorders, depression and burnout do to us. She shares what she went through and answers the question, “Why am I like this?” Her experience can help you break up with anger, resentment, anxiety and guilt.

    Outside Literary Studies - Black...

A timely reconsideration of the history of the profession, Outside Literary Studies investigates how midcentury Black writers built a critical practice tuned to the struggle against racism and colonialism.

This striking contribution to Black literary studies examines the practices of Black writers in the mid-twentieth century to revise our understanding of the institutionalization of literary studies in America. Andy Hines uncovers a vibrant history of interpretive resistance to university-based New Criticism by Black writers of the American left. These include well-known figures such as Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry as well as still underappreciated writers like Melvin B. Tolson and Doxey Wilkerson. In their critical practice, these and other Black writers levied their critique from “outside” venues: behind the closed doors of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, in the classroom at a communist labor school under FBI surveillance, and in a host of journals. From these vantages, Black writers not only called out the racist assumptions of the New Criticism, but also defined Black literary and interpretive practices to support communist and other radical world-making efforts in the mid-twentieth century. Hines’s book thus offers a number of urgent contributions to literary studies: it spotlights a canon of Black literary texts that belong to an important era of anti-racist struggle, and it fills in the pre-history of the rise of Black studies and of ongoing Black dissent against the neoliberal university.
