“The best book on writing ever published” (Patricia T. O’Conner, author of Woe Is I).   When Robert Graves and Alan Hodge decided to collaborate on this manual for writers, the world was in total upheaval. Graves had fled Majorca three years earlier at the start of the Spanish Civil War, and as they labored over their new project, they witnessed the fall of France and the evacuation of Allied forces at Dunkirk. Soon the horror of World War II would reach British soil as well, as the Luftwaffe began bombing London in an effort to destroy the resolve of the English people.   Graves and Hodge believed that at a time when their whole world was falling apart, the survival of English prose sentences—of writing that was clear, concise, and intelligible—had become paramount if hope were going to outlive the onslaught. They came up with forty-one principles for writing, the majority devoted to clarity, the remainder to grace of expression. They studied the prose of a wide range of noted authors and leaders, finding much room for improvement. Successful communication could mean the difference between war and peace, life and death, and they were determined to contribute to its survival. The importance of good writing continues today, as obfuscation, propaganda, manipulative language, and sloppy standards are all too common—and this classic guide is just as useful and important as ever.  Note: This edition restores the full, original 1943 text.   “To see what really expert mavens can do in applying their rule-based expertise to clearing up bad prose, get hold of a copy of The Reader Over Your Shoulder.” —The Atlantic

We broke our new series on learning Portuguese down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Portuguese.
In Unit 1 you will hear Portuguese decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Portuguese speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Portuguese. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Portuguese at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Portuguese, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

This 10 session course provides an introduction to the language of Montenegro. A broad range of topics is covered during this course starting out with basic greetings and answers to questions and then progressing to full sentence structures based on previously learned vocabulary later in the course.Montenegrin is a South Slavic language, closely related to Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian. Historically, these languages were collectively referred to as Serbo-Croatian, a designation that covered the similar dialects spoken across much of the former Yugoslavia. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and Montenegro’s independence in 2006, Montenegrin was officially recognized as a distinct language. The language's origins are deeply rooted in the medieval era, with Old Church Slavonic serving as a foundational influence on Montenegrin and other South Slavic languages. Over time, regional dialects and external influences from neighboring countries shaped the modern form of Montenegrin, differentiating it from Serbian and Croatian in pronunciation, vocabulary, and certain grammatical structures. While Montenegrin shares much of its grammar and vocabulary with Serbian, it includes specific phonetic features, such as the distinct pronunciation of the letters 'ś' and 'ź,' which are not present in other variants.Montenegrin is predominantly spoken in Montenegro, a small but culturally rich country in southeastern Europe, with around 250,000 native speakers. It is the official language of Montenegro, though Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, and Albanian are also widely spoken due to the country’s diverse population. Montenegrin is written in both the Latin and Cyrillic scripts, reflecting its historical ties to both Eastern Orthodox and Western Christian cultural spheres.Montenegrin is employed in all areas of public life in Montenegro, including education, media, and government. The language plays a crucial role in the country’s national identity.
