Summary

The 1970s was the decade that saw the arrival of Alice Cooper as a major force in the rock firmament.   Chris Sutton explores the story of Alice Cooper the band and also Alice the solo performer from their early years through to the end of the decade. A roller-coaster ride of classic albums and singles, the songs recorded in the 1970s still dominate his live sets to this day. The book features all new interview material from key figures including Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway and Neal Smith from the original band, Prakash John from the solo years, and Ernie Cefalu, whose company Pacific Eye and Ear designed the sleeve packaging. Several other musicians, concert promoters and even the band's first roadie have also contributed their thoughts.

All of the albums and singles from Don't Blow Your Mind, until From The Inside are examined in detail, along with related archive releases and songs that didn't make the final cut. In the course of putting the book together much new information came to light that will be of huge interest to hardened collectors and new fans alike, making this book is an essential guide to Alice Cooper in the decade that the band helped to define.

Chris Sutton has been a fan of Alice Cooper since 1972 and the band’s famous debut appearance on Top Of The Pops. The reunion of the band for their UK tour in 2017 stands as one of his happiest memories. He manages Smethwick Heritage Centre Museum and has written several publications for them. He has also written several plays. Alice Cooper in the 1970s is his first venture into music writing, with others to follow. He lives in Great Malvern, UK.

An expansive and deeply personal essay collection which explores the aesthetics of class aspiration, the complications of creating art and fashion, and the limits of identity politics.
In Robyn’s 2010 track Dancing on My Own, the Swedish pop-singer chronicles a night on the dance floor in the shadow of a former lover. She is bitter, angry, and at times desperate, and yet by the time the chorus arrives her frustration has melted away. She decides to dance on her own, and in this way, she transforms her solitude into a more complex joy.
Taking inspiration from Robyn’s seminal track, emerging art critic and curator Simon Wu dances through the institutions of art, capitalism, and identity in these expertly researched, beautifully rendered essays. In “A Model Childhood” he catalogs the decades’ worth of clutter in his mother’s suburban garage and its meaning for himself and his family. In “For Everyone,” Wu explores the complicated sensation of the Telfar bag (often referred to as “the Brooklyn Birkin”) and asks whether fashion can truly be revolutionary in a capitalist system—if something can truly be “for everyone” without undercutting someone else. Throughout, Wu centers the sticky vulnerability of living in a body in a world where history is mapped into every choice we make, every party drug we take, and every person we kiss.
Wu’s message is that to dance on your own is to move from critique into joy. To approach identity with the utmost sympathy for the kinds of belonging it might promise, and to look beyond it. For readers of Cathy Park Hong and Alexander Chee, Dancing on My Own is a deeply felt and ultimately triumphant anthem about the never-ending journey of discovering oneself, and introduces a brilliant new writer on the rise.

In Mystics of the Empire, this groundbreaking study delves into the often-overlooked relationship between Roman emperors and magic, offering a fresh perspective on how sorcery and power intersected in the ancient world. While the lives and reigns of emperors have long captivated scholars, the fascinating role of magic in their rule remains a largely unexplored area of historical inquiry. This book examines how emperors were depicted as patrons of magical practices and as victims and persecutors of sorcery, revealing the complex political, social, and religious ramifications of magic in the Roman Empire.
From the mystical associations of the early emperors to the later, more controversial reigns of figures like Elagabalus, Mystics of the Empire analyzes the twofold nature of magic’s role — whether it was used as a tool for imperial authority or as a threat to Roman stability. The book explores how emperors employed magicians for their own purposes and how their engagement with magic could be a source of political intrigue and downfall. Drawing on ancient sources and case studies, the narrative illuminates how these magical associations shaped the representation of emperors while also addressing the motivations behind these portrayals.
By offering a detailed examination of the magical context from the establishment of the Principate to the end of the Severan dynasty, Mystics of the Empire reveals the intricate interplay between the mystical and the political in ancient Rome. This work challenges traditional understandings of Roman governance, providing readers with a deeper appreciation of how magic was used as a tool of power, control, and subversion in one of history’s most enduring empires.

Forest is a celebration of the diverse ways in which trees and forests are as magnificent, economically relevant and profoundly enchanting today as they ever have been.
Journeying across the continents, writer Matt Collins and photographer Roo Lewis tie together both the historical context and modern-day applications of some of the world's most fascinating and iconic trees. They explore the heritage of woodlands from around the world and meet those whose lives are inexplicably bound to them.
The book is divided into 10 main chapters, each of which explores a tree from a particular genus – Pine, Juniper, Oak, Hornbeam, Cherry, Beech, Birch, Chestnut, Douglas-fir and Poplar. Each chapter provides the reader with a short introduction to the tree, followed by a journalistic account of its relevance to modern day-life (from gin making on Isle of Islay to a truffle farm in Spain), and concludes with an account of the tree in its native forest (from hornbeams in the Ironwoods of Ontario to firs on Vancouver Island).
Captured on medium-format film, Roo’s stunning, rich colour images are the perfect companion to Matt’s engaging storytelling and botanical knowledge. Forest crafts a captivating interpretation of the story of the forest through the trees.
Matt Collins FOREST is a top non-fiction book that explores the subjects of botany, conservation, and the protection of ecosystems. It's the latest in environmental sciences, offering a deep dive into the geography of our earth's rainforests and habitats.

At the very centre of the life of one of the twentieth-century's greatest artists was the most unexpected of life-long influences. The aptly named Jessie Lightfoot shielded the young Francis Bacon from the brutish violence of his bullying father, as well as from his worst self-immolating excesses later in life. The tenderness, wit and warmth of this inimitable Nanny stands in illuminating relief to the sulphurous palette that defined Bacon's work.
Beyond the humour and heart of this extraordinary woman – who finds herself confronted with the shade and guile of the artworld – Maylis Besserie also gives us a glimpse of Ireland in the first half of the twentieth century, both a powder keg and a place apart from the rest of the world, whose landscapes, imagery and animals haunted the famous painter's canvases.
In the final of Maylis Besserie's Irish-French trilogy, her preoccupation with the art and lives of artists who crossed borders between France and Ireland has a fitting climax as Bacon confronts the boundaries between the real and the imagined.

'In a virtuoso feat of literary ventriloquism, Maylis Besserie follows the advice of the Greek poet Cavafy to approach the world from unique and strange angles. Through the eyes of Bacon's nanny and close companion, she gives us brilliant insights into the conflicting personal, sexual, and artistic impulses that shaped a remarkable artist, rendered in the steadfast voice of someone who understood and loved the complex man behind the art. It marks a wonderful conclusion to a remarkable Irish trilogy.' Dermot Bolger

An Audio Journey into Artist's Personal Catastrophes.
Enter the intimate, electrifying world of BL8D VOL. 3 — a limited-edition art journal that defies fashion clichés and dives deep into the fragile intersection of art, death, and human vulnerability. This is not a story about global war. It’s about the quiet disasters we survive every day — the private losses, the invisible griefs, the emotional collapses we rarely name.
In this immersive audio experience, you’ll move through seven deeply personal monologues — each a raw, poetic confrontation with mortality. Each voice is unique, yet strangely familiar — as if your own inner monologue had been cracked open and turned into an elegy.
Seven "little tragedies" that never make it into the news, because they happen every day, everywhere, to everyone. Against the background of world wars, catastrophes, strikes and coups, they become invisible. But in a world where "little death" is respected, there is no place for the "Great War".
