Bacteria form a fundamental branch of life. They are the oldest forms of life and the most prolific of all living organisms, inhabiting every part of the Earth's surface, its ocean depths, and even such inhospitable places as boiling hot springs. In this Very Short Introduction, bacteriologist Sebastian Amyes explores the nature of bacteria, their origin and evolution, bacteria in the environment, and bacteria and disease. Amyes discusses some of the major infections caused by bacteria-bacteria causes pneumonia, diphtheria, cholera, and many other diseases-and shows how these pathogens avoid the defenses of the human body. But the book looks at all aspects of bacteria, not just the negative side, stressing the key benefits of bacteria, which have been harnessed to preserve food, dispose of waste and to provide compost for horticulture. Indeed, life for man and for many animals would be impossible without bacteria. Amyes also offers a glance into the future, describing how bacteria might be manipulated to perform tasks that they previous were unable to perform and discussing the recent construction of a completely synthetic bacterial cell.

Composting is so much more than just transforming food into soil; it is deeply existential, radical, and soul-opening. And no, it's not just for gardeners. Everyone can compost. And even if you're not going to compost at all, knowing about compost is engaging with a dialogue about zero waste.  With wry and brilliant writing, Cassanda Marketos brings the culture, beauty, community, and philosophy of compost to life in this one-of-a-kind, inventive work of narrative nonfiction that brings compost out of the dark ages and into the contemporary moment. Delightfully philosophical and inviting, it is an accessible guide to everything you need to know about compost, with actionable advice for beginners and experienced composters. You will learn why compost works, where to put your compost, how to pick your compost set up, the basics of decomposition, what to put in a compost pile, where to source your compost materials, and how to build a pile. With insights on what tools to consider, how to deal with odors, insects, and other critters, and transitioning your compost pile for colder weather, find easy-to-follow compost pile designs, tips on composting in small spaces, composting with worms, and how to compost things you're always told you can't (you just need to know how).  This book has something for everyone, at any stage in their compost journey, and includes edgy, delightful illustrations by the artist Sludge Thunder throughout. And ... it's literally compostable. Read it, follow the advice, and toss it into your compost pile.

Ichthyology is the branch of zoology dedicated to the study of fish, encompassing their biology, classification, evolution, and ecological roles. Fish, as one of the most diverse and widespread vertebrate groups, inhabit nearly every aquatic environment on Earth, from the deepest ocean trenches to high-altitude freshwater streams. Ichthyology provides essential insights into the anatomy, physiology, behavior, and adaptation of fish, making it a critical field for understanding aquatic ecosystems and their conservation.
The scope of ichthyology extends beyond mere classification, delving into the intricate relationships fish share with their environment and other organisms. Researchers in this field examine the evolutionary history of fish, tracing their origins from primitive jawless species to the highly specialized forms seen today. With over 34,000 known species, fish display an incredible range of adaptations, including bioluminescence, electrolocation, and unique reproductive strategies. By studying these adaptations, ichthyologists gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity of aquatic life and the factors driving evolutionary change.
Ichthyology is also crucial for understanding the ecological balance of aquatic systems. Fish play key roles in food chains, acting as both predators and prey, regulating populations of other aquatic organisms, and contributing to nutrient cycling. Their interactions with their habitats can indicate the overall health of ecosystems, making them valuable bioindicators. Studying fish populations and their responses to environmental changes helps scientists predict and mitigate the effects of climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most commonly diagnosed birth abnormality in the US. With great advances in surgery and medicine, however, survival rates have improved by 75% since the 1940s. With better medical care, babies born today with CHD have a good chance of surviving, but throughout their entire lives they can face surgeries, invasive treatments, lifelong monitoring, frequent medical check-ups, and significant limitations on physical activity, in addition to poor public awareness. Much attention has rightly been focused on providing their parents and caretakers with resources and information.

Little attention, however, has been paid to the psychosocial impacts on these individuals, especially as they grow, mature, and become adults living with a serious, chronic medical condition. Prevalence rates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD are significantly higher (2-3x in some cases) for people living with CHD than the general adult population. Liza Morton and Tracy Livecchi are both mental health professionals who have developed a specialty in working with clients who have chronic medical conditions, and they are both themselves living with CHD. While their powerful personal stories are woven into the narrative, the book is focused on providing evidence-based coping and self-care skills for adults living with CHD.
