Summary

"Understanding Acidic Soils and Their Management" explores the processes of soil acidification and alkalization, highlighting changes in soil chemistry. We cover the theoretical background of ecosystem proton budgets, assessing external and internal acid loads. The book discusses the chemistry of organic matter and oxides of aluminum, iron, and manganese as sources and sinks for acid loads in soils, with special attention to the solubility and reaction kinetics of aluminous minerals.

Our book addresses the formation of toxic elements in soil solutions from inorganic oxides, changes in nutrient status, soil fertility, and the transfer of acidity from soils to surfaces. Originating from concerns over soil acidification in southern Australia, we examine soil acidity within a broader context relevant to all agricultural and natural ecosystems on acid soils.

The first chapters discuss soil acidity chemistry and ecological processes, followed by biological responses to soil acidity, including nitrogen mineralization, plant diseases, mycorrhizal associations, symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes, and genetic variability in plant responses. Subsequent chapters focus on correcting soil acidity problems through liming, application rates, effectiveness of liming materials, and the use of computer modeling procedures to aid researchers and farmers.

African lion populations have decreased by nearly 70% in the past 50 years. Were it not for some courageous activists that number might be even more catastrophic. Under the spiritual guidance of a wise medicine woman who saved her life in the African wilderness, Linda Tucker abandoned her high-powered career to return to the pride lands and follow her destiny as an appointed “keeper of the white lions.” African Sangomas, who are the indigenous African priests, recognize white lions as the direct messengers of the divine—embodying a sacred essence that balances our planet’s ecosystems, and brings true leadership among living beings. Working tirelessly against the enormous forces that are decimating this precious species Linda Tucker reveals her quest to save the white lions from extinction. (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

Blending cutting-edge science with gripping storytelling, award-winning data journalist and competitive amateur athlete Henry Abbott reveals that we are on the cusp of a new era in sports medicine, built around the science of ballistic movements—leaping and landing—and the unique fingerprint of your body's physics.

Abbott's inspiring narrative tells the story of sports scientist Dr. Marcus Elliott and the Peak Performance Project (P3), who use technology to study how athletes move and why they get hurt. Applying machine learning and lessons from biomechanics, medicine, and physiology, doctors at P3 can now detect elevated risk of an ACL tear or a pulled hamstring like an echocardiogram can see warning signs of a heart attack.

Through riveting stories of elite athletes overcoming injuries and pushing themselves to the limit, Abbott presents an evidence-based case for intervening early to protect our bodies. And he suggests that we can all harness the science of ballistic movement not just to run fast or jump high but to move with joy and lead fulfilling athletic lives.
