Synopsis

We love ghost stories here at Wildside Press—witness the fact that we have now now reached our eighth volume in this series. Very few other genres are so versatile and enduring as tales of the supernatural. Ghosts can (and have) appeared in literature for thousands of years, in all countries and continents (and times past, present, and future) throughout the world. But the Victorian era particularly seemed to embrace ghost stories, and that’s when Christmas ghost tales became not just a staple of literature, but a requirement. Seemingly all British fiction magazines (and many newspapers) had to publish at least one ghostly tale in the month of December.Proving that the ghost story tradition is strong to the present day, we have an original story from Phyllis Ann Karr (author of the Frostflower and Thorn series), plus two drawn from Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (which strayed a little more into the fantastic and horrific in the 1960s that it does today), plus another modern story by Wallace West, who is best known as a science fiction writer. Good stuff. Here is the complete lineup:

Step into the haunting world of Charles Beaumont’s Traumerei, a chilling mid-century short story that blurs the line between dream and reality. As midnight approaches, two men grapple with a murderer’s unnerving claim that the entire world exists only within his dream—an idea that threatens to unravel their sense of existence itself. Beaumont masterfully weaves psychological tension, philosophical intrigue, and an atmosphere of creeping dread into a narrative that will leave you questioning what is real long after the final line.

Welcome to Hollywood Lakes, where the magic begins at midlife.

When Shay reopens Hollywood Lakes Inn, her biggest worry is whether the plumbing in the 200-year-old house will spring a leak. But as she readies for her first VIP guest, she's caught in flashbacks that never happened—memories so vivid she wonders if she's losing her perimenopausal mind.

With no time to dwell, she focuses on Porter Nichols, the famous screenwriter renting the entire second floor. He's got a script to finish and a terrible case of writer's block. When an unexpected guest arrives along with some disgruntled muses, Shay suspects his problem is magical in nature. But finding the solution threatens to derail her first night with Finn.

The deeper she delves into Porter's mystery, the more her own is revealed, and the fate of the word witch is called into question. She'll need to summon all of her power—and the ghost of her beloved grandmother—to protect the legacy of the witch.

Hollywood Lakes Magical Midlife is a coming-of-middle-age series filled with witchy adventures, found family, and a slow-burn romance. It's a paranormal women's fiction with wit, attitude, and a heart of gold.

In this provocative, darkly funny, and unique novel—a mix of Lord of the Flies and The Royal Tenenbaums—a dictator's former right-hand man becomes housebound and a family power struggle erupts.
Growing up on a Cuba-esque Caribbean island, Casandra, Calia, and Caleb endure life under two tyrannies: that of their parents, and the Island’s authoritarian dictator, Pop-Pop Mustache. Papa was the dictator's former right-hand man. Now, he’s a political pariah and an ugly parody of a tyrant, treating his home as a nation which he rules with an iron fist. As for Mom, his wife and hateful second in command, she rules from the mind. Obsessed with armchair psychoanalysis, she spends her days reading self-help books and seeks to diagnose the kids, and perhaps even herself.
But within these walls, a rebellion is fomenting. Casandra, a cynical, self-important teenager with the most unlikely of attractions, recruits Caleb, meek yet gifted with a deadly touch, to join her in an insurrection against their father’s arbitrary totalitarianism. Meanwhile, Calia, the silent, youngest sibling who just wants to be left alone to draw animals, may be in league with the flies—whose swarm in and around the house grows larger as Papa’s violence increases.
Equal parts Greek tragedy and horror, with a touch of J.D. Salinger and Luis Buñuel, The Tyranny of Flies is a biting and wholly original subversive masterpiece that examines the inherent violence of authority and the frightening and indelible links between patriarchy, military, and family.
