We’re on the cusp of a paradigm shift, a radical change in worldview that will thrust art and culture onto center stage. What does that mean? How will the world be different? What is the rising spirit of the times and how is it being expressed in art? Arlene Goldbard says, “I have this overwhelming image of energy gathering force and taking shape.” She likens this force to a wave and says, “No one masterminds a wave, ordering all the drops of water into line. Many independent forces operate simultaneously – wind, gravity, disturbances of all kinds – and somehow, the wave mounts.” In this dialogue we explore this mounting force and what’s opposing this rolling tide. Go behind the scenes of the Great White Way with this illustrated guide to the Theater District’s hidden history--an essential book for your explorations of the district from a seasoned Broadway guide. Broadway is one of New York’s greatest treasures, and where there is treasure, there is a backstory. When it comes to Broadway, that backstory is fittingly juicy, dramatic, and unexpected. And no one knows these hidden histories like Teale Dvornik, who has been leading Broadway fans on tours of the theater district since 2017. With her immense knowledge and passion for the theater, Dvornik now takes readers on her one-of-a-kind tour of Broadway, “stopping” at each of the 41 theaters to tell us fun facts, lesser-known history, ghost tales, and interesting stories about actors, performances, stage flukes, blunders, and more, involving the biggest names and productions in theater history.  Learn about the Tiffany chandeliers of the Belasco Theater, the trove of hidden jewels at the Gershwin (which houses years of history from the beloved musical Wicked), and the impresarios and players who influenced Broadway. Readers will also learn the fascinating back stories of theater myths, legends, and traditions. Where did the stage ghost light come from? What started the tradition of intermissions? Which theaters have secret connecting hallways? And much, much more!  Along the way, Teale takes detours to explain stage lingo and dives into some of Broadways most popular shows, including CATS, Hello, Dolly!, and Rent.

The Ming Dynasty emerged from the ashes of the Yuan Dynasty, a Mongol-led empire that had ruled China for nearly a century. By the late 14th century, the Yuan government had become weak and corrupt, plagued by heavy taxation, famines, and widespread unrest. The Chinese population, weary of foreign rule, began to rise in rebellion. Among the many insurgent leaders, one man would rise to power and change the course of Chinese history—Zhu Yuanzhang.
Born into a poor peasant family, Zhu Yuanzhang experienced hardship early in life. Orphaned as a child, he spent years in a Buddhist monastery before joining the Red Turban Rebellion, a movement dedicated to overthrowing the Yuan. His military prowess and strategic mind quickly elevated him through the ranks. As he consolidated power, he systematically eliminated rival factions, eventually establishing himself as the dominant leader of the rebellion. In 1368, Zhu marched his forces into Beijing, forcing the last Yuan emperor to flee northward. Declaring the end of Mongol rule, he proclaimed himself emperor and founded the Ming Dynasty, choosing the name "Ming," meaning "brilliant" or "bright," to symbolize a new era of Chinese rule.
As the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, now known as the Hongwu Emperor, sought to restore Chinese traditions and repair the damage caused by Mongol rule. He reestablished Confucian principles as the foundation of government, reinstating the civil service examination system to ensure that officials were selected based on merit rather than birthright. He also implemented strict laws to reduce corruption, often resorting to harsh punishments to maintain order. His administration worked to rebuild agriculture, improve irrigation systems, and distribute land to farmers, strengthening the economy and ensuring food security.

    ABOUT THE FILM
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 is a 2004 martial arts film directed by Quentin Tarantino, and the second part of a two-film revenge saga. The story follows Beatrix Kiddo, also known as The Bride, who continues her quest to avenge the brutal betrayal by her former comrades in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. As she hunts down those responsible for the massacre at her wedding, the film explores themes of vengeance, betrayal, and redemption, blending western, samurai, and kung fu genres. Tarantino's signature style includes sharp dialogue, dynamic action sequences, and an exploration of complex relationships.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

"The brothel scene where the Bride meets Esteban Vallejo (played by Michael Parks) was the last scene filmed. It was shot at a real Mexican brothel, with the female extras being actual prostitutes who worked there."

"Robert Rodriguez composed the film's score for just one dollar. In return, Tarantino agreed to direct a segment of Rodriguez's Sin City (2005) for the same fee."

"Pai Mei’s three-inch punch is a reference to Bruce Lee’s famous three-inch knockout punch."

"After the credits, an alternate take shows the Bride ripping out one of the Crazy 88’s eyes."
