A young soldier returning from the trenches of the First World War recollects a love that dares not speak its name. Almost one hundred years later, a groom-to-be prepares for his gay wedding.
Queers celebrates a century of evolving social attitudes and political milestones in British gay history, as seen through the eyes of eight individuals.
Poignant and personal, funny, tragic and riotous, these eight monologues for male and female performers cover major events - such as the Wolfenden Report of 1957, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the debate over the age of consent - through deeply affecting and personal rites-of-passage stories.
Curated by Mark Gatiss, the monologues were commissioned to mark the anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, which decriminalised homosexual acts in private between two men over the age of twenty-one. They were broadcast on BBC Four in 2017, directed and produced by Gatiss, and starring Alan Cumming, Rebecca Front, Ian Gelder, Kadiff Kirwan, Russell Tovey, Gemma Whelan, Ben Whishaw and Fionn Whitehead. They were staged at The Old Vic in London.

A vivid, emotional stage version of Mary Webb's novel of rural passion, premiered by Shared Experience Theatre Company.
Incorporating traditional dances and folk songs, Gone to Earth tells the story of Hazel, an innocent and free-spirited seventeen-year-old child of nature living in rural Shropshire. But when both the wicked squire and the altruistic minister fall in love with her, she is drawn into a world of earthly passions which threatens to destroy her – as simply and relentlessly as a Greek tragedy.
Helen Edmundson's stage adaptation of Mary Webb's 1917 novel Gone to Earth was first staged by Shared Experience on UK tour in 2004, including performances at the Lyric Hammersmith, London, from May 2004.
'It takes a special kind of company to follow the award-winning success of After Mrs Rochester with a piece as powerful as this. Long may we share in the experience' - Evening Standard
'Goes right to the heart of the work, capturing its fervid, glowering atmosphere' - Observer
'Balancing the real and the dreamlike without losing the authenticity of either, Helen Edmundson has distilled the book into an echo chamber of themes... Mary Webb's novel [is] brought brilliantly to life' - Time Out

As night falls on A&E, and Pharmacist Puck starts to dole out medicine, a very midsummer madness begins to take root…
Chris Bush's A Dream was first performed at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, in a production by Sheffield People's Theatre.
The Nick Hern Books Multiplay Drama series features large-cast plays specifically written to be performed by and appeal to older teenagers and young adults.
