Synopsis

Tommy Dunleavy and his life-long friends, 20-somethings in a northeast Philadelphia parish, have no idea their beloved pastor is an abuser, not until a friend dies by suicide after filing a rape complaint.Shocked and guilt-ridden, friendships splinter. The "did he or didn't he" debate rages in the neighborhood. Tommy knows Father is guilty. Everyone’s favorite moral philosopher, Isabel Dalhousie, finds herself caught up in a delicate dispute between members of a prominent family while her husband, Jamie, is dragged into an internecine rivalry of his own.

When Isabel is invited to serve on the advisory committee of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, her husband, Jamie, expresses concern about the demands on her time. Never one to duck an obligation, however, Isabel says she’d be happy to
join. There she meets a woman named Laura, whose husband—a prominent wine merchant from an illustrious family—and son are at odds. Laura asks whether Isabel might arbitrate between them. Isabel is reluctant to intervene in a familial
drama, but, always one for practical and courteous solutions to theoretical problems, she feels obligated to help. Will the demands on her moral attention never cease?

Meanwhile, having criticized Isabel for getting involved in the affairs of others, Jamie does precisely that himself. He’s helping to select a new cellist for his ensemble but suspects that the conductor’s attention may be focused on
something other than his favored candidate’s cello skills. Jamie feels it’s important that the most qualified applicant gets the job—but how to determine whether the conductor has the right qualifications in mind?

With so many complicated and fraught issues demanding their attention, Isabel and Jamie will have to tap deep into their reserves of tact and goodwill as they navigate the tricky and turbulent waters of these emotional matters.

Doctor Percy Trevelyan brings Holmes an unusual problem. Having been a brilliant student but a poor man, Dr. Trevelyan has found himself a participant in an unusual business arrangement. A man named Blessington, claiming to have some money to invest, has set Trevelyan up in premises with a prestigious address and paid all his expenses. In return, he demands three-fourths of all the money that the doctor's practice earns, which he collects every evening, going over the books thoroughly and leaving the doctor 5/3d of every guinea (21 shillings or £1 1/- in pre-decimalized currency) from the day's takings. Blessington is himself infirm, it turns out, and likes this arrangement because he can always have a doctor nearby.

This is the second of the Treb Lincoln Novels by Bob Bitchin.
    Adventure at every turn!
A small gray fishing boat loomed out of the heavy fog that surrounded the yacht, Rogue.
The name could barely be read on the stern of the large boat through the fog. She was a William Garden designed ketch, well over 50 feet in length with her main mast sticking over 60 feet into the air and disappearing in the fog. She had graceful lines reminiscent of the sailing ships of old, with her clipper bow and canoe stern. Heavy black accent and boot stripes set off the stark white of her hull, with black sail covers keeping in touch with her pirate ancestry. Her raised poop deck was highly varnished, and she was a stately vessel as she sat calmly on her mooring. A small anchor light was visible at the top of her mast, and she was alone in the bay, looking as if she had sailed in from out of the past. What happens next will alter the lives of Treb Lincoln and his friends more than even he could believe!
Content Warning: This book contains situations that readers may find uncomfortable, concerning, or triggering. These situations include a rape scene of a minor and an age gap between romantic partners.

Peter Bannerman, veterinarian and amateur detective, deserves a summer vacation. Peter and his family head to a remote fishing lodge in northern Manitoba for a canoeing trip with his champion sniffer dog, Pippin. But a series of incidents color their plans. The lodge’s sled team of huskies has been poisoned and, at the same time, a floatplane crashes into the lake, killing the pilot and both passengers. While Peter works to save the huskies, it is discovered that the plane crash wasn’t an accident. It was murder.

It’s been a hot and dry summer, and one morning the Bannerman family wakes up to find a forest fire spreading quickly. They manage to dodge the conflagration, making it back to the lodge before it becomes cut off from the outside world. Peter soon figures out that the murderer, who probably also poisoned the huskies, must be among the other guests or staff trapped with them at the lodge. The power fails. The now-enormous fire draws nearer. Can Peter discover the culprit in time?

The Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie is a gripping early installment in the celebrated Hercule Poirot series, blending clever deduction, international intrigue, and unexpected twists into a masterfully constructed mystery. First published in 1923, this novel showcases Christie's growing brilliance in crafting puzzles that challenge both her detective and her readers.

The story begins when Hercule Poirot receives an urgent letter from a French millionaire who fears for his life. By the time Poirot and his loyal friend Captain Arthur Hastings arrive in northern France, the man has already been found dead—stabbed in the back and discovered in a freshly dug grave near a golf course. What appears at first to be a straightforward crime of passion quickly unravels into a complex web of deception.

As Poirot examines the evidence, he uncovers contradictions and hidden motives at every turn. The victim's troubled marriage, mysterious neighbors, secret identities, and shadowy past all complicate the investigation. The peaceful coastal setting contrasts sharply with the dark secrets buried beneath its surface, creating an atmosphere of mounting suspense.

Christie expertly plays with perception and misdirection, introducing a host of intriguing suspects whose alibis and stories rarely align. Clues are planted with precision, inviting readers to piece together the puzzle alongside Poirot. Yet as always, the famed Belgian detective relies not merely on physical evidence but on his understanding of psychology—the "little grey cells" that allow him to see what others overlook.

Captain Hastings provides a lively counterpoint to Poirot's meticulous logic. His perspective adds warmth and occasional humor, as well as moments of romantic distraction that further complicate matters. The dynamic between the two characters deepens in this novel, offering both camaraderie and contrast.

One of the novel's greatest strengths lies in its surprises. Just when the solution seems within reach, Christie deftly shifts the narrative, revealing new layers of intrigue. The final resolution is both satisfying and startling, demonstrating her skill at turning assumptions upside down.

Set against the windswept landscapes of northern France, The Murder on the Links combines atmosphere, clever plotting, and memorable characters in a compelling tale of crime and deduction. It stands as a testament to Agatha Christie's enduring genius and her ability to keep readers guessing until the very last page.

With its intricate mystery and brilliant detective work, this classic novel remains an essential read for lovers of traditional whodunits and timeless crime fiction.
