Summary

In "What is Darwinism?" Charles Hodge embarks on a critical examination of the theories posited by Charles Darwin, delving into the implications of natural selection on the fabric of faith and scientific understanding. Hodge's prose reflects the intellectual fervor of the late 19th century, intertwining clear, accessible language with rigorous philosophical inquiry. He situates Darwinism within the broader context of natural theology, addressing its intersection with issues of religious belief and moral philosophy, and poses essential questions about the nature of existence and divinity amidst the scientific paradigm shift of his time. Charles Hodge, a prominent theologian and a key figure in Princeton's theological seminary, was acutely aware of the rift growing between science and religion during the Victorian era. His commitment to Reformed theology and his scholarly background in both ancient texts and contemporary science informed his critiques against Darwinian principles. Hodge's aim was not merely to refute Darwinism but to provide a framework for understanding the relationship between faith and scientific discovery. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in the historical tension between theology and evolutionary biology, as well as for those who seek to contemplate the foundational questions of existence and God's role in creation. Hodge's thoughtful analysis offers timeless insights into the ongoing dialogue between science and religion.

The quest for power in animals is so much richer, so much more nuanced than who wins what knock-down, drag-out fight. Indeed, power struggles among animals often look more like an opera than a boxing match. Tracing the path to power for over thirty different species on six continents, writer and behavioral ecologist Lee Alan Dugatkin takes us on a journey around the globe, shepherded by leading researchers who have discovered that in everything from hyenas to dolphins, bonobos to field mice, cichlid fish to cuttlefish, copperhead snakes to ravens, and meerkats to mongooses, power revolves around spying, deception, manipulation, forming and breaking up alliances, complex assessments of potential opponents, building social networks, and more. Power pervades every aspect of the social life of animals: what they eat, where they eat, where they live, whom they mate with, how many offspring they produce, whom they join forces with, and whom they work to depose. In some species, power can even change an animal's sex. Nor are humans invulnerable to this magnificently intricate melodrama: Dugatkin's tales of the researchers studying power in animals are full of unexpected pitfalls, twists and turns, serendipity, and the pure joy of scientific discovery.

    The Anatomy of Deception -...

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, trust in the healthcare system seems to be at an all-time low. Conspiracy theories are now mainstream, and distrust of government health agencies is common among private citizens. Yet many of those same individuals still profess trust in their doctors. What, then, is driving the general mistrust in medicine, and how can the public's faith be restored?

The Anatomy of Deception investigates the cause behind this seeming uptick in distrust by tracing the unexpected connection between medical mistrust and the move toward far right ideology in the United States. Drawing on personal qualitative research and interviews, health writer and expert Sara Gorman challenges traditional concepts of medical mistrust and argues that the loss of institutional trust in American health care signals a larger breakdown in democracy as a whole. In six short chapters, Gorman advances the idea of medical mistrust not as a byproduct of personal or historical abuses but as a direct result of bias, miscommunication, and lack of access that has slowly eroded trust in the public health system over time. She argues that we can build back trust in medicine through investments in health equity as a first step towards healing the schisms present in modern American society.
