  Richard Sibbes was a Puritan pastor and theologian in the 17th century. His best known work, The Bruised Reed, is based on a Scripture verse from Matt. 12:20: "A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory." Sibbes uses this text to respond to the despondent thoughts and fears that many Christians have.   Walden is a work by noted transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. The text is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. The work is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and to some degree a manual for self-reliance. First published in 1854, Walden details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond amid woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts.  
  Thoreau used this time to write his first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. The experience later inspired Walden, in which Thoreau compresses the time into a single calendar year and uses passages of four seasons to symbolize human development. The book can be seen as performance art, a demonstration of how easy it can be to acquire the four necessities of life. Once acquired, he believed people should then focus their efforts on personal growth.   
  By immersing himself in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection. Simple living and self-sufficiency were Thoreau's other goals, and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy, a central theme of the American Romantic period.   
  Thoreau makes precise scientific observations of nature as well as metaphorical and poetic uses of natural phenomena. He identifies many plants and animals by both their popular and scientific names, records in detail the color and clarity of different bodies of water, precisely dates and describes the freezing and thawing of the pond, and recounts his experiments to measure the depth and shape of the bottom of the supposedly "bottomless" Walden Pond.

  Across the world we are killing too many dogs needlessly. 
  In Australia approximately 80% of all dogs that end up in shelters are there due to either Dog to Dog or Dog to Human Reactivity. Sadly, this is not a problem exclusive to Australia. 
  While this is a startling statistic, the sad truth is that the vast majority of dogs facing euthanasia in these shelters are highly salvageable and the solutions are often very simple to apply. Their death is not only unnecessary, but is a blight on how many owners and trainers not only poorly understand dogs, but often unintentionally train them to fail. 
  What is even harder to accept is that the solution to this epidemic of needless stress is available to everyone, and it starts from how we communicate and train our dogs in our homes, day to day. We have the ability to channel the drives and instincts of our dogs from potential problems into tools that can make these amazing animals thrive with a mind-set based on self-control and low stress, regardless of the environment our dogs are exposed to. 
  Best of all it can happen at home, every day. 
  We all have the ability to change how our dogs see triggers in life and in turn educate them into making better choices around how to respond to day-to-day situations in a positive and highly constructive way. 
  If this book can change the approach of just one person to achieve a better understanding of what causes reactivity in their dog, then that is one person more than before who has better vision and skills to help resolve this problem.
