Drawing on meticulously gathered statistics, documented cases, and firsthand accounts, Wells-Barnett exposes the systemic violence inflicted upon African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South. With unwavering resolve, she dismantles the myths used to justify lynchings, revealing the deeply entrenched racial prejudices and legal failures that allowed such atrocities to occur unchecked. Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught lawyer, legislator, and vocal opponent of slavery, was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Lincoln proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a savvy leader: His Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for the abolition of slavery. At the same time, his Gettysburg Address stands as one of the most famous pieces of oratory in American history. In April 1865, with the Union on the brink of victory, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln’s assassination made him a martyr to the cause of liberty. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history.

Offering both a framework and a set of practices that are grounded in different nonviolence traditions, Heart at the Center asks listeners to consider what a pedagogy of nonviolence looks like, sounds like, and feels like in the classroom.

Written with warmth, expertise, and humility, Mike Tinoco invites us into his classroom, drawing on stories from his own life and powerful examples from civil rights movement leaders to explore questions such as:

    ● How do we create classrooms and schools that are grounded in needs and match our vision for the kind of world we dream of?

    ● How can we challenge conventional classroom management practices, welcome conflict, and nurture relationships with and amongst our students to foster positive peace?

    ● How can we embed love in our curriculum and be inclusive of our students' lives, centering community, healing, and justice?

    ● How can we slow down and take care of ourselves without compromising the urgency to fight for justice?

Heart at the Center is a book for educators who believe that a different kind of classroom, a different kind of school, and a different kind of world are possible.

"...every chapter of Winning French Minds delivered something new, not only because French language radio being a less-frequented area of study, but also due to the author's ability to tie these radio efforts to events surrounding the French people and events unfolding on the European geopolitical stage." — World War II DatabaseWorld War II was very much a war of the radios. A relatively new technology, radio as a tool was exploited by all of the participants of the war to win the hearts and minds of the people and to steer public opinion. The period 1940 to 1942 was the most volatile of the war, with the Nazis capturing large parts of western Europe and dominating on the Eastern front. At this time France was separated into two nominally independent zones, and public opinion could easily have been swayed in favor of the New German Order. This could have had potentially disastrous consequences for any future Allied attempt to liberate Europe, and so the battle for French minds was launched using the new technology of radio. This narrative of that campaign develops chronologically through a series of topics including major military incidents, youth, food, family, psychological warfare, sports and work, as presented by different radio stations – in particular Radiodiffusion, controlled by Vichy France; Radio Paris, controlled by the Nazis; and the BBC – offering a systematic comparative analysis of radio propaganda messages and building a vivid picture of the evolution of broadcasts in the context of the complex political and social impact of the war on the French population. Using original primary sources from archives in Britain and France, broadcast recordings, radio magazines, and interviews conducted by British Intelligence with those arriving from France during the war, this is a fascinating and unique insight into wartime radio propaganda from 1940 to 1942.
