Summary

In "Oliver Twist and The Old Curiosity Shop: 2 Unabridged Classics, Illustrated," Charles Dickens presents a profound exploration of society's underbelly through the lives of orphaned children and the struggles of the proletariat. Dickens employs his signature narrative style, characterized by rich characterizations and vivid descriptions, immersing readers in the gritty reality of 19th-century London. This dual volume juxtaposes the grim experiences of Oliver, a vulnerable orphan navigating a cruel world, with the enchanting, yet poignant tale of Little Nell and her challenges against the backdrop of societal decay, thereby highlighting themes of innocence, poverty, and resilience. Coupled with illustrations that enhance the text, this collection invites readers into a vivid pictorial experience alongside Dickens's masterful prose. Charles Dickens (1812-1870), a prominent Victorian novelist and social critic, drew heavily from his own experiences of childhood hardship and social injustice. Growing up in a lower-middle-class family, Dickens's keen observations of the struggles faced by the impoverished fueled his passion for reform and shaped his narrative voice. His exposure to the grim realities of London life cast a long shadow over his writing, where he intricately weaved social commentary within engaging stories that championed the downtrodden. This collection is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of social issues and human resilience. Through its compelling narratives and striking illustrations, this volume serves as an enduring testament to Dickens's ability to illuminate the darkest corners of society, making it a delightful yet thought-provoking addition to both literary collections and the libraries of aspiring readers.

'If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.'

Often ranked as one of the greatest twentieth century novels of all time, Orwell's 1984 is a prime example of political dystopian fiction at its very best.

Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth, rewriting newspapers and reports to distort history and adhere to the arbitrary dictates of Big Brother – the leading political force in Oceania. However, beneath his outward conformity, Winston has profound reservations about Big Brother's authoritarian regime. Before long, he begins the unthinkable and writes a diary to escape Big Brother's tyranny: an act punishable by death. Finding an ally in the brave and beautiful Julia, Winston's resolve to resist Big Brother is strengthened, and they seek to join forces with an opposing political party. But in Oceania, there is little room for solidarity, rebellion or love, and Big Brother, it seems, knows all.

First published in 1949 at a time of great social and political unrest, 1984 is widely considered ahead of its time, remaining acutely relevant to this day. This edition is brilliantly narrated by Hugh Kermode.

Nikolai Gogol was one of the first to use the technique of the grotesque. According to Viktor Shklovsky, Gogol's strange style of writing resembles the "ostranenie" technique of defamiliarization. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture and folklore. His later writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls). The novel Taras Bulba (1835), the play Marriage (1842), and the short stories "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", are also among his best-known works.

This full-cast performance of Dracula offers a new way to experience Bram Stoker's seminal vampire story, which follows Abraham Van Helsing's efforts to track down Lucy Seward after she becomes the victim of Count Dracula. Originally written by Irish playwright Hamilton Deane, this stage play was the first authorized adaptation of the 1897 epistolary novel Dracula. Beginning a tour in England in 1924, it was then revised by American writer John L. Balderstone for a Broadway production that opened in October, 1927, featuring Hungarian-American actor Bela Lugosi in his first English-language role. Balderstone's revision would become the basis of the 1931 film adaptation, also starring Lugosi. The play was revived in 1977, receiving the Tony Award for Best Revival and leading to the 1979 film, both starring Frank Langella.
