Summary

Laura Gethryn spends the first 7 years of her life in the shadow of the Black Mountains. Her horsey mother idolizes the absent soldier and his return a broken man, emasculated by the Great War, leaves them destined to remain the disappointed parents of a single girl child. Caught up in the dance of dysfunction that is their marriage, they hand over Laura's education to Mr Howells, a very different man to Gethryn. Welsh speaking, working-class and intellectual, he, his talented daughter, Mair, and disaffected son, Idris, open Laura's eyes to a surprising new world. Years later, Laura receives in the mail a package: Mr Howell's Parisian notebooks detailing his failure to escape the chains of his upbringing. Reading them, destroying them, may be the biggest service she does both her mentor and her future self.

Peggy was a great friend to Steve when they were teens -- Can he help her now as she faces the death penalty?

How could the girl he knew grow up to be the woman the media are calling “The Black Widow of Birch Valley?”
Can he and his clue-sniffing golden retriever Rochester dig up the details that might acquit Peggy, while avoiding the slippery slope of hacking that could cause him to lose everything he cares for? Trust Rochester to keep Steve on the straight and narrow, and bring the real killer to justice.

Title: A Watcher by the Dead
    Author: Ambrose Bierce
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1889
    Public Domain: Yes
    Series Placement: Timeless Terrors #57
    Description:
A Watcher by the Dead is a masterclass in psychological horror — a tense, claustrophobic story that proves fear itself can be deadly.
The tale begins with a wager: one man must spend the night alone in a room with a corpse to prove that fear of the dead is mere superstition. At first, the room is silent and still, but as hours stretch on, dread slowly tightens its grip. Every shadow, every creak, every flicker of light becomes a torment, twisting his imagination into terror. The suspense crescendos as the prank meant to test courage takes a horrifying and fatal turn.
Bierce’s story relies on atmosphere and the human mind’s susceptibility to fear rather than gore or spectacle. The terror is immediate, intimate, and unforgettable.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance brings Bierce’s chilling tale of dread and fatal curiosity vividly to life. While the text is firmly in the public domain, this narration is an original performance and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
Part of Timeless Terrors, a series dedicated to resurrecting the masters of the macabre, A Watcher by the Dead reminds us that sometimes the most dangerous thing in a room is not the corpse itself… but the fear it inspires.

It's 1936, and private investigator Gene Hammons has more work than he can handle. A crime syndicate, J. Edgar Hoover, a wealthy family from back East, and a wily stalker all want something from him. His capable-but-drug-addicted brother, still a homicide detective, is as much a hindrance as a help. Luckily, Hammons finds a professional ally in Pamela Bradbury, a fellow gumshoe with some new tricks to teach him. When the two pair up, there doesn't seem to be a case they can't solve, from kidnapping to blackmail to an intricate gold-smuggling operation.

But then a young nurse with red hair is sadistically raped and killed, and Gene recognizes the signs of a "lust murderer," having solved the case of the University Park Strangler years earlier. When he's contacted by the killer, Hammons knows he and Pamela must work quickly to catch the brutal murderer before he strikes again. The two come to each other's rescue more than once, and as deep feelings develop between them, it's not lost on Gene that their relationship might well prove dangerous—especially for Pamela, with her lovely red hair.

Rich in atmosphere and authentic period detail, The Nurse Murders is a gritty, nail-biting race to catch a killer in a city struggling to assert itself amidst the hardships, corruption, and political machinations of post-World War I America.
