Summary

Humanity faces massive disruptions. In "War in the Fifth Domain," Catherine Dumont challenges prevailing narratives about the benefits of certain technological advances related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

It is still not clear if we are really heading towards a state of global governance, with authoritarian features, that will supervise and control each human being thanks to exorbitant technological development. It is impossible to ensure that all or even any of the conspiracy theories about the New World Order are true, but it is undeniable that the 2020 pandemic and its constant replication has become an earthquake of unprecedented scale, responsible for "gigantic tectonics movements in geopolitics". What would happen if we had to face a wave of cyberattacks that affected companies and their servers, but also the operation of hospitals, transportation and security? If you need answers to these and other questions, then go ahead and pick up this book.

The history of the Spanish Peninsula is closely bound to that of the Moors. The term “Spain” was not in wide use until the region was united by the monarchs of Aragon and Castile, and the Moors called the lands they ruled in the Iberian Peninsula Al-Andalus, traditionally thought to be an Arabic transliteration of Vandal, the Germanic tribe which briefly ruled the region in the early fifth century. The English name Andalusia derives from the Spanish Andalucia, which is still used by Spain to name its southern region.
Not surprisingly, three religions attempting to coexist during medieval times resulted in nearly incessant conflicts, marked by high taxation, disparate societies, rigid cultural controls, and systemic violence. Despite the odds, these three religions managed to live in a state of quasi-acceptance and peace in most of the major cities in the Iberian Peninsula like Cordoba and Tolaydough, with sporadic warfare occurring on the borders between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms near the Pyrenees Mountains. Muslims, Christians, and Jews would attempt to reorganize their societies several times over the centuries through warfare, always with Jews on the lower rungs and Christians and Muslims fighting it out above them.
The end of the Byzantine Empire had a profound effect not only on the Middle East but Europe as well. Constantinople had played a crucial part in the Crusades, and the fall of the Byzantines meant that the Ottomans now shared a border with Europe. The Islamic empire was viewed as a threat by the predominantly Christian continent to their west, and it took little time for different European nations to start clashing with the powerful Turks. In fact, the Ottomans would clash with Russians, Austrians, Venetians, Polish, and more before collapsing as a result of World War I, when they were part of the Central Powers.

Did you know that the Dutch were some of the first who came up with stocks? They were also known for their gigantic fleet, their ships, their colonies, and so much more. The 17th century was a golden age, a golden century for the Dutch, who discovered how to go to the new world in Asia, America, and other continents to transport spices, minerals, and other materials. The Dutch East India Company, officially the United East India Company (Dutch: Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie; VOC), was a megacorporation created in the early 17th century by a government-directed merger of many competing Dutch trade services. You might think that Amazon or Google is big, but the VOC is still thought to be the world's biggest corporation in documented history. It was established on March 20th, 1602, as a chartered business to trade with Mughal India in the early contemporary period, from which it imported 50% of fabrics and 80% of silks, mostly from the Bengal Subah area. In addition, when the Dutch federal government rewarded it a 21-year monopoly on the Dutch spice trade, the business traded with Indianized Southeast Asian nations.Find out more about this by going through this book.
