Sinopsis

Medieval Medicine explores the evolution of medical practices in Europe from 500 to 1500 AD, revealing a world where herbal remedies, surgical techniques, and complex theories intertwined. The book highlights how medieval approaches to health were shaped by empirical observation, religious beliefs, and classical learning. Intriguingly, surgery, despite limitations in anesthesia and anatomical understanding, achieved surprising sophistication in areas like wound care and cataract removal. The book argues that medieval medicine, while seemingly primitive today, laid crucial groundwork for later medical advancements. It delves into the dominance of humoral theory, the role of religion in healing, and the diverse roles of lay healers, monastic physicians, and university doctors. Progressing through chapters, Medieval Medicine first introduces key concepts, then explores herbal remedies and surgical procedures in detail, culminating in an analysis of the shift toward more scientific approaches during the late medieval period. A distinctive aspect of this work is its integration of social context with medical practices, explaining why treatments were used and how they reflected contemporary beliefs. By examining primary sources like medical treatises and herbals, the book offers a balanced perspective on the ingenuity and resourcefulness of medieval practitioners, making it valuable for anyone interested in medical or medieval history.

The legality of abortion in the United States is subject to individual state laws. In 1973, Roe v. Wade made the first abortion case to be taken to the Supreme Court, which had made it federally legal. In 1992, Roe was partially overturned by Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which stated that states cannot place legal restrictions posing an undue burden for "the purpose or effect of placing a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus." In 2022, both Roe and Casey were overturned, and abortions are now subject to regulations based on state laws once again. Individual states can regulate and limit the use of abortion, some of which already have through the use of "trigger laws", which made abortion illegal within the first and second trimesters when Roe was overturned. Eight states—Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin—still have pre-Roe abortion bans in their laws, which may be enforced too.
This reading provides a thorough overview of the federal legalisation regarding the legality of abor-tion. It presents a judicial history and legislative response of the US federal institutions. In addition this collection is enriched with information which are indispensable part of every abortion debate in the United States.

Although grief and feelings of loss after the death of a loved one are natural and universal experiences, sudden, violent, and traumatic loss puts survivors at increased risk for a range of mental health problems and greatly complicates the grieving process. The Grief Recovery with Individualized Evidence-Based Formulation (GRIEF) approach is designed specifically for treating individuals suffering from the grief that results from a traumatic death, and provides a transdiagnostic, modular, and comprehensive framework to target the common underlying symptoms of PTSD, depression, and prolonged grief disorder (PGD).

Treating Traumatic Loss starts with an introduction to traumatic loss and the GRIEF approach model, then guides you, step by step, through treatment planning—from conducting a thorough assessment of symptoms informed by a multicultural lens, to selecting modules for intervention. A chapter dedicated to each of eight modules provides recommendations on how to perform intervention techniques in your practice. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), experiential, and narrative practices and strategies from both the trauma and grief fields are synthesized into one module-based approach that addresses the unique needs of your clients—providing a powerful, flexible, and individualized way to improve treatment outcomes.
