Summary

Parole Board Decisions examines the complex role of parole boards within the criminal justice system, focusing on how they balance public safety with the potential for rehabilitation. Parole boards face the difficult task of evaluating an individual's risk of recidivism and potential for successful reintegration into society. One key aspect explored is the influence of factors beyond objective risk assessment on parole board decisions, which can lead to inconsistencies in outcomes. The book delves into the historical context of parole, tracing its evolution and how societal changes have shaped current practices. It highlights how parole decisions impact prison populations and the reintegration prospects of formerly incarcerated individuals. Through empirical data, case studies, and statistical analyses, the book reveals patterns and disparities in parole outcomes across different states.

The book's approach involves understanding the core concepts of parole and risk assessment, analyzing the factors that influence parole board decisions, and discussing policy recommendations. Ultimately, Parole Board Decisions argues for greater transparency and standardized evaluation metrics in the parole process. It aims to stimulate dialogue on improving the criminal justice system by addressing the political pressures and personal biases that can influence parole board decisions. The book progresses through an introduction of parole concepts, analysis of influencing factors, and culminates in policy recommendations for safer communities.

Republicans who live closer to the U.S.-Mexico border are less likely to support constructing a wall than those who live farther away. After a mass shooting, gun sales and permit applications skyrocket in nearby communities. Experiencing an extreme weather event like a hurricane or flood can encourage someone to attribute climate change to human activity. Why do we react so differently to faraway events and ones that take place on our doorsteps, and what does this reveal about our political landscape?

Proximity Politics is an examination of the role of distance in shaping attitudes, behaviors, and understandings of the world. Jeronimo Cortina documents the crucial ways space and place influence public opinion. He demonstrates that the closer someone is to an event, social group, or policy, the likelier they are to have first-hand, specific, grounded knowledge of the subject. Conversely, distance leads to detachment, making it more likely that decontextualized or unreliable information and individual or group biases will prevail. Considering a range of case studies, Cortina unravels how spatial, emotional, temporal, social, and cultural distances affect public opinion. Bringing together quantitative and qualitative data, Proximity Politics shows that even in today's interconnected world, we are still profoundly influenced by what happens next door.

The human body is the primary instrument of war, yet those waging war often confront soldiers' bodies in a detached or merely intellectual way. In The Tenderness of Silent Minds, Martha C. Nussbaum, a leading thinker on emotion, morality, and justice, conducts a pioneering study of Benjamin Britten's musical representations of the tender male body amidst the brutality of war, and their ability to transform consciousness by evoking potent, non-personal emotions.

Offering a reading of Britten's views about the value and beauty of the body that situates these in the context of his thirty-nine year partnership with his lover, the singer Peter Pears, and also surveying pacifist themes in works written both before and after War Requiem, Nussbaum presents a compelling framework for critically assessing Britten's oeuvre. Nussbaum engages with a remarkably wide range of Britten's works, examining his treatment of aggression and its roots in his collaborations with the poet W. H. Auden, offering readings of the value placed on the body in early partnerships with Britten's beloved and singer Peter Pears, and surveying pacifist themes in Britten's earlier works. The analysis throughout is enriched with perspectives from Britten's personal letters and thoughtful study of the social and political backdrop of fear and homophobic disgust in mid-twentieth century Britain.

The Meghadhuta also known as Meghasandesam is one of the beautiful works of Kalidasa. It is a poem in Sanskrit Language consisting of 117 verses. It is actually one of a few minor compositions of Kalidasa. Being one of the greatest poets of Sanskrit Literature, he has produced epics like the Raghuvamsa Mahakavya and Kumarasambhavam and dramas like Abigyana Sakuntalam.
The ideas contained in this poem is simple but romantic. Alaka is a mountain in the Himalayas. The god of wealth, Kubera is the king of this place. He has a group of divine attendants working for him. These attendants are known as Yakshas. One of these Yakshas was very much smitten and obsessed with his wife. Hence, he ignored his duties. Kubera, therefore, cursed him and banished him into the woods on planet Earth. The Yaksha came to a mountainous place called Ramagiri named after Lord Rama near the present state of Chattisgarh in India and was residing in an ashram there.
The Yaksha spent several months on the mountain. Thoroughly dejected, the love-lorn Yaksha keeps thinking about his wife. His wife also keeps thinking about him all day and all night. It is the time of monsoon. The Yaksha sees a rain cloud passing by. He requests the cloud to carry a message to his wife. The Yaksha then starts to describe the route that the cloud should take to meet his lover. This forms the crux of the verses of this poem.
The works of Kalidasa are synonymous with the beauty of nature, lyrical poetry, dramatic stories, great heroes and sensuous heroines. The Meghadhuta focusses mainly on sensual love and the beauty of nature. Kalidasa’s genius lies in making these two subjects flow into each other in this work. For example, Kalidasa picturises the rivers as sensuous women, and he advises his friend namely the cloud to take interest in the rivers along the way on his journey from the plains to Alaka.

The illuminati are a shadowy group that controls the world from behind the scenes. They're pulling the strings of the financial elite, government, the media, and even natural disasters.

The illuminati are in fact aliens. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is fact. The illuminati are a secret society that has been manipulating the world for centuries. They are responsible for major political and social events, and they control the everything. They are secretive and powerful, and they are not human. In fact, their bloodline goes back millennia to the very moment they genetically manipulated the human race on Earth.

The evidence is clear. The illuminati are aliens, and they are not our friends. They are manipulative and controlling, and they are hiding in the shadows. If you're not careful, they will control you too.
