Summary

In a small northern village, where the drizzle never stops and secrets ferment beneath the moss, two teenagers vanish. No one saw anything. No one heard anything.
Helena Barreiro and Sara Aguilar face a case that soon awakens echoes of the past: twenty years ago, another girl disappeared in the same area without leaving a trace. Among isolated hamlets, mist‑shrouded hills, and neighbors who stay far too quiet, the Civil Guard plunges into a race against time where every clue feels like a maze.
As the investigation moves forward, the fine rain —the orballo— slowly seeps into all of them, revealing old guilt, broken loves, and truths someone would do anything to keep buried.
Because sometimes the rain doesn’t wash things away. It reveals everything.

It's not all snowflakes and sugarplums when murder crashes Taylorsford's first Winterfest in the eighth installment of the Blue Ridge Library series, perfect for fans of Jenn McKinlay and Ellery Adams.

Returning to her role as an amateur detective is the last thing library director Amy Muir wants. She's already buried under an avalanche of responsibilities, including sharing the directorship of the local public library, parenting her holiday-obsessed five-year-old twins, and helping her choreographer husband, Richard, present The Nutcracker as part of the town's festivities. With her frosty mother-in-law, Fiona, visiting for the holidays, Amy definitely has enough on her Christmas cookie plate.

But when the chair of the festival committee is found as dead as Dickens's proverbial doornail at the town's ice rink, Amy is determined to uncover the real perpetrator to protect her brother-in-law, Ethan Payne, who was placed at the scene. The clock is ticking down as Sheriff Brad Tucker is equally sure that Ethan is guilty.

It's beginning to look a lot like the murderer hasn't wrapped up his killing spree, and now, it might just be "lights out" on the holiday festivities—and on Amy's life.

In a city where human worth is measured in decimals, survival is bought with the blood of the condemned.
Welcome to Halcyon, a sterile, ash-choked metropolis ruled by the merciless mathematics of the Mercy Index. Dr. Calvin Zeller wears the pristine white coat of a senior hospice surgeon, but his true job is that of a polite executioner. When a citizen's score drops to zero, Calvin provides a painless, sedated end before the state's brutal organ harvesters can dismantle them. It is a solitary rebellion of quiet mercy, built to suppress the agonizing guilt of betraying his own brother.
But his fragile existence is shattered when Vespera Vale, an undocumented architect, infiltrates his secure ward. She brings impossible demands and devastating truths. Vespera is carving a massive sanctuary deep beneath the earth—the Cathedral of Ash—to hide the city's discarded. To build it, she needs medical supplies, untraceable currency, and a surgeon willing to forge death certificates right under the nose of the Ministry's relentless auditors. Forced to confront his own complicity, Calvin must descend into Halcyon's treacherous black market and orchestrate an impossible deception from the inside out.
Why you will love this: Fans of intense, claustrophobic Dystopian Fiction will be captivated by this thrilling tale of defiance. Packed with pulse-pounding tension, oppressive dystopian tropes, moral ambiguity, and the dark underbelly of a high-tech totalitarian regime, it is a masterclass in psychological suspense and underground rebellion.
John Newbill delivers a harrowing, cinematic experience with his uniquely sharp prose and masterful pacing, pulling listeners deep into a world where true mercy requires getting your hands irreversibly dirty.

New York Times bestselling master of suspense, Elizabeth Peters, brings an exotic world of adventure, intrigue, and danger to vivid life, in a tale as powerful as ancient Egypt.
The Emersons have returned to the Valley of the Kings in 1922 and Amelia Peabody and her family look forward to delving once more into the age-old mysteries buried in Egypt's ever-shifting sands. But a widow's strange story -- and even stranger request -- is about to plunge them into a storm of secrets, treachery, and murder.
The woman, a well-known author, has come bearing an ill-gotten treasure -- a golden likeness of a forgotten king -- which she claims is cursed. She insists it has taken the life of her husband and unless it is returned to the tomb from which it was stolen, more people will die.
Amelia and her clan resolve to uncover the secrets of the statue's origins, setting off on a trail that twists and turns in directions they never anticipated -- and, perhaps, toward an old nemesis with unscrupulous new designs. But each step toward the truth seems to reveal another peril, suggesting to the intrepid Amelia that the curse is more than mere superstition. And its next victim might well be a beloved family member ... or Amelia Peabody herself.
A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time, The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.
