Summary

Seville, 1499.An inquisitorial scribe is sent to deliver a sealed document—marked with black wax—to a figure no one dares name aloud: Fray Sanguinius.

What begins as a routine assignment soon spirals into a descent through dream, rot, and revelation. Whispers crawl from behind crucifixes. Mirrors refuse to reflect. Blood appears where no wound exists. Something ancient, buried beneath the stones of faith, is stirring—and it speaks in ink.

The Crypt of the Inquisitor is a literary gothic horror novel set in late 15th-century Spain, blending historical realism with ritual, hallucination, and apocalyptic dread. Told through the haunted journals of Jerónimo de Alcalá, and punctuated by letters, visions, forbidden manuscripts, and secret documents, this is the chronicle of a man whose words may awaken the very thing he was sent to contain.

From burning plazas to sealed crypts beneath the cathedral, from celestial maps to mirrors made of obsidian, Jerónimo begins to suspect he is not the author of his destiny—but the parchment upon which something else is writing.

For fans of Poe, Lovecraft, and The Name of the Rose, this novel offers a slow-burning descent into theological madness, historical terror, and symbolic possession.

Plot: The story's anonymous narrator has moved from New England to New York City, and greatly regrets it. One night, while wandering in a historic part of Greenwich Village, he happens upon a man dressed in garments from the 18th century. The man offers to show the narrator the secrets of the town. - The man brings the narrator to his home; there, he tells him the story of a squire who bargained with Native Americans for the secrets of their rituals concerning time and space, which were practiced on the land where the squire had recently taken up residence. After learning these secrets, the squire killed the Native Americans by giving them "monstrous bad rum"; within a week all of them were dead, and he alone had the secret knowledge. The man shows the narrator visions of the city's past and future so terrifying that the narrator begins to scream wildly. The screams rouse the spirits of the Native Americans to take vengeance on the man, who is the same squire from 1768.

The Kybalion  is a book originally published in 1908 by "Three Initiates" (often identified as the New Thought pioneer William Walker Atkinson, 1862–1932) that purports to convey the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus.
While it shares with ancient and medieval Hermetic texts a number of traits such as philosophical mentalism, the concept of 'as above, so below', and the idea that everything consists of gendered polar opposites, as a whole it is more indebted to the ideas of modern occultist authors, especially those of the New Thought movement to which Atkinson belonged. A modern Hermetic tract, it has been widely influential in New Age circles since the twentieth century.
