Sinopsis

In "The Campaign of 1812," Carl Von Clausewitz offers a profound analysis of one of the most significant military campaigns in European history. Written with a clarity that is both incisive and comprehensive, Clausewitz employs a rigorous and systematic approach to military theory, blending detailed historical recounting with philosophical reflections on war's nature. The text serves as a critical examination of strategy, tactics, and the interplay of political objectives and military action, all framed within the broader context of the Napoleonic Wars. This work is marked by its emphasis on the chaotic, unpredictable aspects of warfare, a theme that resonates with Clausewitz's famous adage that war is merely a continuation of politics by other means. Carl Von Clausewitz was not only a military theorist, but also a Prussian general who actively participated in the Napoleonic Wars. His experiences on the battlefield and his deep engagement with military and political theory profoundly shaped his perspectives on warfare. "The Campaign of 1812" reflects his attempts to synthesize these experiences with his understanding of strategy, gaining insights that would profoundly influence military thought in the decades to come. This compelling study is highly recommended for anyone interested in military history, theory, or the complexities of Napoleonic strategy. Beyond its immediate historical context, Clausewitz's insights into the nature of conflict and the relationship between war and politics remain relevant today, making this book an essential read for scholars, military professionals, and enthusiasts alike.

The early history of Earth covers such vast stretches of time that years, centuries, and even millennia become virtually meaningless. Instead, paleontologists and scientists who study geochronology divide time into periods and eras.
The Silurian Age occurred during the mid-Paleozoic, and despite its relative brevity, the era developed some interesting features that promulgated life on Earth. Roderick J. Murchison, a British geologist, named a sequence of rocks after a group of indigenous people called the Silures living in Wales during the mid-19th century. Despite their absence in the Silurian Age, the name was bestowed to honor the tribe.
Murchison was inspired by close friend Adam Sedgwick, who named the Cambrian Age, employing the Latin word for Wales. In 1835, the two presented a paper together entitled On the Silurian and Cambrian Systems. Their separate categorizing systems caused a serious enough disagreement over chronology that the friendship ended bitterly. The alternative name for Siluria was Gotlandia after the Baltica island of Gotland.
What ultimately precipitated these subdivisions in the chronology was a “famous unconformity” on the River Onny in Shropshire. It indicated a natural break within “classic Silurian on its own home territory.” The timeline for beginning and end dates has remained imprecise, but the order of fossilized discoveries has proven correct. Joachim Barrande, a French paleontologist, geologist, and botanist, pursued the same issue in the Prague Basin of Bohemia. Studying the Paleozoic trilobite for a period of 10 years, his extensive work was published in his Silurian System of Central Bohemia. Altogether, he identified and analyzed over 4,000 new fossil species, producing the enormous Encyclopedia of Fossils, numbering over 6,000 pages.

In 2018, police announced that they had finally arrested the "Golden State Killer," a man responsible for over 140 burglaries, fifty rapes, and at least thirteen murders committed in California throughout the 1970s and '80s. That man turned out to be a former California police officer, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr.

Just two months earlier, the publication of I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara had rocked the world of true crime. Published two years after her death, the book charts McNamara's obsessive search for the prolific criminal who had been known over the years as the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker, and the Visalia Ransacker, among other epithets. McNamara is credited with coining the "Golden State Killer" moniker and heightening public awareness of the—at the time—still unsolved case.

William Thorp dives into the investigation, exploring the dark side of sunny California, the advances in forensic innovation that made solving this case possible, and the story inside the story—one of an amateur sleuth who dedicated the last years of her life to understanding how one of the country's worst criminals could have spent so many decades undetected.
