Summary

In "The Five Indian Nations of Canada," Cadwallader Colden provides a detailed ethnographic study of the Iroquois Confederacy, articulating their social structures, cultural practices, and political significance in the 18th century. Colden's literary style is characterized by a keen observational acuity and a narrative voice that reflects both respect and curiosity towards Indigenous cultures. This work is situated within the broader context of Enlightenment thought, which sought to classify and understand different peoples, often contrasting them against European civilization. Colden's synthesis of firsthand accounts and historical sources renders a multifaceted portrait of an essential aspect of North American history. Cadwallader Colden, a Scottish-born colonial administrator and naturalist, came to prominence in New York's early colonial society. His deep engagement with the Native American communities and his role as a colonial servant informed his perspectives on the delicate balance of power between European settlers and Indigenous nations. His interest in the natural world and human societies reflects the broader currents of Enlightenment philosophy, emphasizing reason and empirical observation. This book is recommended for historians, anthropologists, and general readers alike, as it provides an invaluable lens into the lives and governance of the Iroquois Confederacy. Colden's insights not only enhance understanding of Indigenous culture but also contribute significantly to the discourse on colonialism and its lasting impacts.

Authors and proud Kentuckians Blair Thomas Hess and Cameron M. Ludwick share the best stories from their experiences as writers, travelers, and residents in this ode to the Commonwealth. From the iconic to the obscure, the book reveals vital knowledge that every Kentuckian―whether by birth, residence, or simply in mind and heart―should know. What is beer cheese? Who was Bill Monroe? Where can you get a hemp hot dog? Listeners are introduced to the brilliant minds behind the Louisville Slugger, the Bowie knife, and pioneering work in genetics. Munich is widely reviled today and is held up as the epitome of appeasement, but historians still debate its effects on the Second World War, as well as Neville Chamberlain's character and motivations. Some believe the attempted appeasement of Nazi Germany hastened, or even caused, the mayhem occupying the next seven years. Others believe that the pact merely failed to alter war's inevitable arrival in either direction. Historians and authors alternately interpret Chamberlain as a bumbling, arrogant fool, a strong-willed statesman who simply miscalculated the nature of Hitler and Nazi Germany, or even a man with dictatorial ambitions surreptitiously inserting himself into the Fuhrer's orbit and prevented from further damaging democracy only by his fall and death from bowel cancer. Another possible interpretation, with considerable documentary support, asserts Chamberlain wished to enlist Germany's aid against the state most Europeans perceived as the true threat of the era, the Soviet Union.
Europe’s attempts to appease him, most notably at Munich in 1938, failed, as Nazi Germany swallowed up Austria and Czechoslovakia by 1939. Italy was on the march as well, invading Albania in April of 1939. The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1 of that year. Two days later, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany, and World War II had begun in earnest. Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940.
