Cognitive distortion translation distortion and poetic distortion as semiotic shifts

Summary

Both interlingual translation shifts and poetic production can be seen in a semiotic perspective in terms of mental filtering. The shared ground of the three processes – cognition translation versification – is to be found in a semiotic perspective: signs (prototext, reality, perception) are interpreted and worked through (mind, interpretants, cognition) and give as an output an object (metatext, poem, worldview). By trying to classify the shifts resulting from such processes – distortions – with a semiotically shared grid of categories, the hypothesis is that the categories themselves – already existing within the separate fields – can be reciprocally fine-tuned. The very notion of “shift” – derived from translation criticism, and in particular from the prototext-metatext comparison – becomes in this hypothesis a connection transforming the shifts possible in the other mentioned fields into mutual benchmarks.

Explore the secret behind George Washington’s military genius with an award-winning West Point history professor. George Washington came to be known as Father of His Country. In his role as commander in chief of the Continental Army, George Washington defeated the British in the American Revolution and established the United States of America. Through his extraordinary military leadership, he guaranteed that the American Republic would move forward in its revolutionary experiment. So how was Washington able to win this seemingly unwinnable war? This compelling 15-lecture audio course, presented by West Point history professor Seanegan Sculley, answers this and many more questions about one of the most foundational figures in American history. Professor Sculley explores Washington’s singular military career from its beginnings during the French and Indian War through the end of the Revolution. After investigating Washington’s boyhood experiences and his service in the French and Indian War, you’ll look into the first years of the American Revolution, as he attempts to control a disorganized armed force with no institutional structure. Next, you’ll transition into the second half of the war, as Washington learns from his mistakes and builds a more professional army capable of working with allies to defeat the British. Last, you’ll analyze his actions as a strategist and tactician, as a military administrator and commander, and finally as the first president of the United States wrestling with lingering issues from the War for Independence. This publication was privately produced and is not the product of an official of the United States Army acting in an official capacity. Agrippa I: Loyal Roman or Planning a Rebellion? — A Forensic and Political Investigation of Agrippa I: Loyal Roman, Rebel King, or Something in Between
This presents the complete script of the author's thesis defence, originally delivered at the conclusion of Master's degree in Classical Archaeology at the University of Pisa. The thesis was awarded the distinction of cum laude and reflects an interdisciplinary exploration of historical, political, archaeological, and medical perspectives.
Based on the author's original 750-page dissertation, this defence examines the complex figure of Agrippa I—grandson of Herod the Great and client king of Judea under Roman rule. Was Agrippa a loyal Roman statesman, a potential rebel, or a cunning political survivor?
Using a critical approach to ancient literary sources, archaeological evidence, and modern historiography, the work explores:The material and political landscape of Agrippa's reignHis diplomatic positioning between Roman and Judean authoritiesThe recorded symptoms and political consequences of his sudden deathThe forensic plausibility of poisoning as a causeCompeting narratives of loyalty, betrayal, and legacy in the first century CE
Both accessible and intellectually grounded, the content is ideal for readers interested in Roman history, ancient politics, and the enduring questions of allegiance and power in antiquity.

Raising Ollie - How My Nonbinary...

    Tom Rademacher

Ollie, who used to hate weekends because they meant no school, was crying on the way to school almost every day. Sure, there were the slings and arrows of bullies and bad teachers, but, maybe worse, Ollie, a funny, anxious, smart kid, was gravely underchallenged and also struggling with identity and how to live totally as themselves. Ollie begged to switch to a new school with "kids like me," and so they made the change.

Raising Ollie is dad Tom Rademacher's story (really, many stories) of that eventful and sometimes painful school year, parenting Ollie and relearning every day what it means to be a father and teacher. As Ollie—who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns—flourishes in their new school, Rademacher is making an eye-opening adjustment to a new school of his own, one that's whiter and more suburban than anywhere he has previously taught, with a history of racial tension that he tries to address and navigate.

While Ollie is learning to finally feel comfortable at school, Rademacher increasingly sees how his own educational struggles, anxieties, and childhood upbringing are reflected in his teaching, writing, and parenting, as well as in Ollie's experience. He shows us how raising a kid changes everything—and how much raising a kid like Ollie can teach us about who we are and what we're doing in the world.
