Synopsis

After successfully closing the Bloodthirsty case, Jim Donaghue now heads his own unit in Washington. His mission: tracking down and capturing serial and mass murderers. With full authority from the highest-ranking officials of the FBI in his pocket, the lead special agent and his team are more effective than ever.

Following the wrap-up of a successful investigation, Donaghue is taking a well-earned break at his secluded weekend cabin when an unexpected message reaches him. An old acquaintance is asking him to make contact. Despite his misgivings, the agent calls back, only to be met with hair-raising claims.

Donaghue decides to check out the story and soon finds himself on the road to Kentucky to verify whether there’s any truth to what the informant said. But there’s always the possibility that this is just a trap to settle an old score and lure him into danger.

Upon arrival, Donaghue quickly realizes that the informant's claims might hold more water than he’d expected. As he digs deeper into the case, he discovers that while everyone in town appears friendly, the community is far from united. Secrets are currency, and most residents use what they know to serve their own interests. One thing they all agree on: Here, you’re never alone.

As Donaghue begins his investigation, the killer gets into full swing, picking off victims seemingly at random. But all of Donaghue’s instincts tell him that speed is of the essence, because the Butcher isn’t killing on a whim. He’s got a purpose, and when he’s accomplished it, he’ll vanish without a trace.

The ocean is vast and deep. What lurks beneath can tear boats asunder.
Richard Shaw, an insurance investigator from Lloyds of London, arrives in Rio de Janeiro in 1851. He is there to discover why so many of the great sailing ships of the world are disappearing in the south Atlantic, never making it to or from the Pacific Ocean.
From each side of the continent, two ships set sail: one helmed by Captain Peech to hunt for treasure and the other ferrying passengers like Cassandra Coulter, who only hopes for safe passage. Both ships encounter murder and supernatural forces. When the survivors unwillingly rendezvous in Cape Horn, they run straight into Richard Shaw.
The Sea of the Vanities is a supernatural sea adventure that answers the question: should death be feared? Or is it a mercy?

Born in 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle is the author most famous for creating the detective Sherlock Holmes and is renowned as the world's greatest crime fiction writer. Spending his childhood in Scotland, his first career choice was to be a doctor, and indeed he ended up with his own medical practice. It was during the failure of this first business venture that Doyle began writing to pass the time. With the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Doyle embarked on a series of crime stories that brought new levels of realism to a marginalized genre. He also became a real-life detective on occasion, personally investigating two crimes that eventually led to the release of the accused men. His Sherlock Holmes stories have found enduring popularity and have seen countless Television, Stage, and film adaptations over the course of the last century.
