Summary

Workbook on The Long Slide: Thirty Years in American Journalism by Tucker Carlson | Discussions Made Easy

Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson is a fervent libertarian-conservative who has never shied away from expressing his political views in the public arena. As a fact-checker for the national conservative newspaper Policy Review, Carlson's first assignment was to learn the ropes, but he eventually left the company because he was dissatisfied with the working conditions., He relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he worked as a reporter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. In 1995, he became a contributing editor at the Weekly Standard magazine. Carlson has also written columns for publications such as The New York Times and Reader's Digest, among others.
In 2000, Carlson made the crossover to television, co-hosting the short-lived show The Spin Room, which aired on NBC. In 2001, he began co-hosting the CNN debate show Crossfire. In January 2005, CNN announced Carlson's dismissal and the discontinuation of his television show, The Carlson Show. The incident occurred in the aftermath of his disagreement with comedian Jon Stewart, who appeared on the show in October 2004. In June 2005, he began hosting Tucker (The Situation with Tucker Carlson) on MSNBC. He has also appeared on the MSNBC newscast Verdict with Dan Abrams on a regular basis as a panelist. Carlson began working with Fox News in May 2009 as a contributor. He became a senior fellow at the Cato Institute that same year, although he eventually left the organization and is no longer affiliated with it.

We live in an age uniquely attentive to the problem of mental illness. More than half of us will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in our lifetime. It has been easy, for centuries, to relegate persistent emotional and mental struggles entirely to the realm of a failed personal work ethic ("Just don't worry so much!"), not enough faith ("Just pray harder!"), or, in recent years, a chemical imbalance in our brains ("Just take this pill!"). Yet, for those of us who live with mental illness, none of these suggestions provides the quick relief it promises, and the continued struggle takes its toll on our already burdened hearts and minds.

In All Who Are Weary, Emmy Kegler joins the listener on the long walk of reflection, understanding, and compassion, calling followers of Jesus back to ancient practices of lament, vulnerability, honesty, community, and hope. This book is not a map to a cure, nor a perfectly restorative prayer. Written with a wide community in mind—patients, but also parents and partners, coworkers and friends, pastors and therapists, and the whole church—All Who Are Weary points to the embodied grace known in Jesus, trusting in the promise of a lighter load for all.

  • The Digital Fourth Amendment - Privacy and Policing in Our Online World - cover

    The Digital Fourth Amendment -...

    Orin Kerr

When can the government read your email or monitor your web surfing? When can the police search your phone or copy your computer files? In the United States, the answers come from the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution and its ban on "unreasonable searches and seizures."

The Digital Fourth Amendment takes the listener inside the legal world of how courts are interpreting the Fourth Amendment in the digital age. Computers, smartphones, and the Internet have transformed criminal investigations, and even a routine crime is likely to lead to digital evidence. But courts are struggling to apply old Fourth Amendment concepts to the new digital world. Mechanically applying old rules from physical investigations doesn't make sense, as it often leads to dramatic expansions of government power just based on coincidences of computer design.

The Digital Fourth Amendment shows how judges must craft new rules for the new world of digital evidence. It explains the challenges courts confront as they translate old protections to a new technological world, bringing the reader up to date on the latest cases and rulings. Informed by legal history and the latest technology, this book gives courts a blueprint for legal change with clear rules for courts to adopt to restore our constitutional rights in the computer age.
