Workbook on State of Terror: A Novel by Louise Penny | Discussions Made Easy

Please Note: This is an unofficial companion guide mean to enhance your appreciation of State of Terror: A Novel by Louise Penny and does not contain any text of the original book.

Louise Penny owes part of her success to her late husband, who she considers as someone who has inspired, encouraged, and supported her no matter what. Her best-known work is the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache book series, which has been a #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestseller for years. Prior to publishing her first book, she worked as a journalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. While she may have begun writing in her 40s, numerous honors have been bestowed upon her, including the CWA Dagger and the Agatha Awards, which she has received seven times. She was also a nominee for the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2007. She currently resides in a small village south of Montréal with her dog, Bishop.
Hillary Rodham Clinton has shown her worth as a public servant for years, despite the fact that she has been attacked by many, particularly during her time as First Lady of the United States. Former Secretary of State, New York Senator, First Lady of the United States, First Lady of Arkansas, a practicing lawyer and law professor, activist, and volunteer—she has a long list of accomplishments to her credit. As the 2016 Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Hillary made history by being the first woman to be nominated for president by a major political party in the United States. All of those who know her well would characterize her as a lady who has never forgotten where she came from.

Amid growing international concerns about income inequality, labor abuses, racial injustice, and disinformation online, Conscience Incorporated examines the gaps in current corporate social responsibility measures and what more needs be done to address these challenges. The rise of new technologies such as smartphones and social media have made it easier than ever to document and spread awareness of corporate actions. Despite these developments, large corporations often fail to meaningfully address the human rights abuses linked to their business models and practices.

Drawing from research into the history of business ethics, Michael Posner provides a blueprint for global business leaders to navigate human rights challenges and adopt sustainable corporate practices. He highlights the need for increased protections for outsourced workers in faraway nations, greater attention to harmful online content, and prioritization of human rights by investors.

Posner proposes a series of concrete reforms and argues compellingly for why businesses need to devote greater time and resources to protecting basic human rights. Conscience Incorporated is a powerful challenge to the status quo and advocates for a fundamental shift in the principles that govern global businesses.
