For success in school and life, students need more than proficiency in academic subjects and good scores on tests; those goals should form the floor, not the ceiling, of their education. Students need to develop attributes that aren't typically measured on standardized tests. In this lively, engaging book, educators will learn how to foster the "Formative Five" skills that today's students need, including

    ● Empathy: learning to see the world through others' perspectives.

    ● Self-control: cultivating the abilities to focus and delay self-gratification.

    ● Integrity: recognizing right from wrong and practicing ethical behavior.

    ● Embracing diversity: recognizing and appreciating human differences.

    ● Grit: persevering in the face of challenge.

When educators engage students in understanding and developing these five skills, they change mindsets and raise expectations for student learning. As an added benefit, they see significant improvements in school and classroom culture. The Formative Five will help teachers, principals, and anyone else who has a stake in education prepare their students—and themselves—for a future in which the only constant will be change.

Long before it was known as Afghanistan, and even longer before it acquired its current reputation, Afghanistan’s modern borders were fairly congruent with the ancient country known as Bactria. Bactria was the seat of several different kingdoms during the course of many centuries, but none were as successful as the Kushan Empire, the dominant political entity in Central Asia from the early 2nd century BCE until the early 3rd century CE, during which time the Kushan rulers played a major role in the first iteration of the trade networks known collectively as the Silk Road. The Kushans began as nomadic steppe warriors who eventually grew tired of constantly migrating and subsequently put their skills and experience to use by conquering Bactria and creating a kingdom that was stronger economically than it was militarily. Taking advantage of their location on the Silk Road trade routes, the Kushan kings charged fees and tolls for goods passing through their empire and developed over-land and sea routes that brought goods from China to Rome and vice versa. But silk, textiles, gold, silver, and other commodities were not the only things that entered the Kushan Empire from the East and West; the Kushan Empire was a focal point for the spread of ideas, diplomats, and diseases. Although the Romans and the Chinese never had direct contact, they both had diplomatic relations with the Kushan kings, who proved to be outstanding diplomats. The Kushan Empire eventually became a transit point of people and ideas, where enormous wealth was exchanged alongside early forms of monotheism, such as Zoroastrianism and Buddhism. The Kushan kings recognized these cultural benefits and so practiced a policy of patronizing different religious philosophies and maintaining peaceful relations with other powers along the Silk Roads to keep the flow of goods moving.

The truth about the bloody battles fought to establish a nation

For the first time, The Australian Wars brings what for too long has been considered the historical past into connection with its reverberations in the present.

It is estimated up to 100,000 people died in the frontier wars that raged across Australia for more than 150 years. This is equivalent to the combined total of all Australians killed in foreign battles to date. But there are few memorials marking these first, domestic wars.

The Australian Wars was conceived by Rachel Perkins following her award-winning documentary series produced by Blackfella Films for SBS and edited along with Stephen Gapps, Mina Murray and Henry Reynolds. This is the first book to tell the story of the continental sweep of massacres, guerilla warfare, resistance and the contests of firearms and traditional Aboriginal weaponry as Indigenous nations resisted colonial occupation of their lands, territory by territory. At stake was the sovereignty of an entire country.

Black and white writers tell the stories of these battles across three crucial time periods, and all the states and territories. It notes the lands that were unconquered, as well as the role of disease, weapons and tactics, and the story of women on the frontier.

This history is still alive in those descendants who carry the stories of their ancestors. The Australian Wars brings what for too long has been considered the historical past into the present so that we might know the truth of the origins of this nation.

'As it peels back the enduring veils of silence and denial about our shared past, The Australian Wars exposes a complex legacy of shame, pride, crime and valour. It offers us an opportunity to ask ourselves, in a spirit of humility and honesty, what it truly means to be an Australian patriot. The authors of this work have delivered a huge favour wrapped in a hard lesson.' TIM WINTON

'An inspiring, game-changing work of collective truth-telling about our shared history.' KATE GRENVILLE

‘Rachel Perkins and her fellow editors have done us all a great service in bringing this history together.' DAVID KEMP AC

'Together with the TV series The Australian Wars puts down a marker: no more denial, no more cant. These wars happened and we cannot blink them away.' DON WATSON

'This book has the best of contemporary research. It will ensure that the original people of this nation are not denied the dignity of their resistance and the truth telling has the edge it should.' KIM BEAZLEY

'A compelling call to truth-telling and national reckoning. Essential reading for all Australians.' THE HON KEN WYATT AC
