Sinossi

Workplace Honor Code explores the evolution of workplace ethics, from informal agreements to complex compliance policies, examining the impact on ethical conduct. The formalization of ethics, intended for transparency, has potentially diluted individual moral responsibility. The book argues for a shift from mere compliance to valuing ethical character.

The book traces the development of workplace ethics across three sections. It begins by defining "ethics as a craft," shaped by mentorship and reputation. It then examines the rise of formal ethics policies, including corporate codes of conduct and legislation. Finally, it explores the consequences of formalization, such as "box-checking" ethics, and suggests strategies for revitalizing individual ethical responsibility, making it valuable for HR professionals.

Drawing insights from business history, legal case studies, and surveys, the book highlights the transition from handshake deals to formalized ethics policies, revealing how businesses define and enforce ethical standards. It uniquely views ethics as a skill to be cultivated, not just a set of rules, encouraging a more engaged approach to ethical decision-making and ethical leadership.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the battles have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take 4 years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it did, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the biggest battles ever since.
By the close of 1864, Abraham Lincoln had been reelected, the Union army had taken Nashville from General Hood, and Sherman had concluded his total war, “slash-and-burn” march of destruction to Savannah, Georgia, offering it as a Christmas present to Lincoln. Nevertheless, with everything seemingly falling to pieces, the South still held out hope of some sort of miracle, and Davis even attempted to send a peace delegation to meet with Lincoln in the early months of 1865. To most observers, the South was clearly reaching its end, but Davis had no intention of quitting the war. Even while he was fleeing, he attempted to order Confederate generals in the field to keep fighting. On April 9, 1865, Lee formally surrendered his weary army to Grant at Appomattox. Appomattox is frequently cited as the end of the Civil War, but there still remained several Confederate armies across the country, mostly under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston, the same commander who arrived with reinforcements by rail during the First Battle of Bull Run and gave the South hope with victory in the first major battle.
On April 26, 1865, Johnston defied Davis’s orders and surrendered all of his forces to General Sherman, and over the next month, the remaining Confederate forces would surrender or quit.

The Maya civilization is one of the most enigmatic and awe-inspiring cultures of the ancient world. Flourishing for thousands of years in the dense jungles of Mesoamerica, the Maya built vast cities, developed a sophisticated writing system, and mapped the heavens with astonishing accuracy. Yet, beyond their architectural and scientific achievements, the Maya were a deeply spiritual people, weaving a rich tapestry of myths, legends, and sacred beliefs that connected them to the cosmos. Their mythology was not mere storytelling—it was a living force, shaping their rituals, governance, and daily existence.
At the heart of Maya spirituality was a complex pantheon of gods and supernatural beings, each governing different aspects of life, death, and the afterlife. Unlike many Western traditions that separate the divine from the earthly realm, the Maya believed that the gods were intimately involved in every facet of existence. Deities such as Itzamná, the creator god, and Chaac, the bringer of rain, were both revered and feared, their influence reflected in ceremonies, offerings, and astronomical observations. The legendary Popol Vuh, often referred to as the “Maya Bible,” preserved many of these sacred stories, including the epic journey of the Hero Twins, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, who overcame the lords of the underworld, Xibalba, to restore cosmic order.
Maya mythology was deeply intertwined with their concept of time and destiny. Their intricate calendar system, which included the Tzolk’in (a sacred 260-day calendar) and the Long Count, was not merely a tool for marking days but a means of understanding cosmic cycles and divine will. Priests and scribes interpreted these calendars to determine auspicious dates for everything from coronations to warfare. Prophecies and celestial events were seen as messages from the gods, guiding the fate of individuals and entire kingdoms.

"...an excellent primer about the operations in and around the Anzio beachhead. Students of operational art, multinational operations, and amphibious warfare will find Staiger’s narrative interesting and thought-provoking." — Military Review

The Allied amphibious operation codenamed Shingle was launched in late January 1944. It was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. Success depended on the element of surprise, and the speed with which the invaders could build up strength and move inland. This was understood by General Mark Clark, commander of the US Fifth Army, but not fully understood by his subordinate commanders.

This German account focuses on the landing at Anzio as it was the only one that failed to achieve its objective of smashing the German defense and achieving operational freedom of movement. The battle lasted over six weeks, with mistakes made by leadership on both sides, and consequently also great sacrifice by soldiers on both sides. But the operation was not a German success either, and attempts to prevent the creation of a strong bridgehead failed. Ultimately the Allies would reach Rome, and the Allies applied lessons from this battle to facilitate the success of Overlord, launched five months later.

While not complete, as the author did not have access to some of the war diaries of higher levels of German command, this is still one of the best German accounts of Operation Shingle and is here translated into English for the first time.
