  Mark Twain delivered this speech at the dedication of new buildings at the College of the City of New York. The mayor who preceded him mentioned that good citizenship should take precedence even over education. Twain uses this introduction to transition into a funny discussion of the motto “In God we trust” being stamped into U.S. coins and how this relates to principles of citizenship. “If the cholera or black plague should come to these shores, perhaps the bulk of the nation would pray to be delivered from it,” he remarks, “but the rest would put their trust in the Health Board of the City of New York.”

  Breasts are celebrated and scrutinised, fetishised and censored, worshipped and weaponised. As the saying goes: ‘Behind every great woman is a pair of boobs trying desperately to stay out of the conversation.’ 
   
  For most of her life, unconcernedly flat-chested author and academic Dr Lisa Portolan had never really thought about her breasts, or boobs in general. But then she met Amanda Goff - aka former escort Samantha X - fellow author, journalist and owner of a huge pair of breasts. A friendship formed, then a working relationship ... and as the two women embarked on business dealings together, the monolithic power of mammary glands became glaringly apparent.  
   
  All too often, men would ogle Amanda's chest in meetings, text her romantic/perverse messages, and try to get into her pants. The same men would focus their attention on Lisa's face, send her professional emails, and otherwise ignore her. Lisa was left pondering whether she should have her breasts augmented in order to become more visible, while Amanda wondered whether she should have hers reduced.  
   
  But they both found themselves asking the same question: why all the fuss about boobs? 
   
  Lisa and Amanda don't pretend to have all the answers - they're not even sure how they feel about them most of the time. But that's precisely the point. Boobs is a smart, irreverent, wide-ranging and often hilarious conversation about the human and social-historical journey of breasts, richly illustrated with personal anecdotes and perspectives from coauthors at opposite ends of the bust spectrum.

  A Tyranny for the Good of Its...

  Asset manager mega-giants BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard have accumulated unprecedented levels of stock ownership in every major US company. Voting the shares they hold for clients allows these companies to force their own "environmental, social, and governance" or "ESG" agenda on the American corporate sector and, by extension, on all of us. An asset manager's traditional duty is to maximize returns for its investors, but these financial elites expand their duties through "stakeholder capitalism," the idea that a company is responsible not only for its actual shareholders, but for everyone who is affected by the company. Thus, they can impose their preferred ESG goals under the guise of benefiting an amorphous group of non-investors. 
   
   
   
  This elite-dominated economic system is nothing more than socialism in sheep's clothing. "ESG" defines the champagne socialist agenda that would devastate the working and middle classes globally. Now, in the face of rising opposition, these financial elites are rebranding—shifting their terminology to conceal their intent. A Tyranny for the Good of its Victims exposes how these elites have pursued—and will continue to pursue—their ESG goals: to transform our consumer-driven free-market economy into one that is subject to their elitist demands, overriding the will of the people whom they deem incapable of self-government.

  When states die, there are massive consequences. Somalia's death in 1991 created a safe haven for criminal non-state actors and has unsettled the Horn of Africa for decades. When the Iraqi state was dismantled in 2003, a similar set of consequences plagued the Middle East and the international system more broadly.In How States Die, Douglas Lemke provides an analysis of this phenomenon by reconceptualizing the definitions of the state and state death. A state exists, according to Lemke, whenever a set of state-like political entities exercise control over a populated territory. This includes both sovereign states and "territorial contenders," which lack formal diplomatic recognition. Conceiving statehood in this way vastly increases the population of states that have experienced state death, which casts new light on the phenomenon. This increased range not only expands the list of ways states can die; it also provides insights into whether diplomatic recognition is associated with longer life and shows that state strength is not related to state death. Similarly, in contrast to the conventional wisdom, victories in conflict do not coincide with longer state survival. State death is one of the central questions within international relations, and Lemke's reformulation of what a state is will transform our understanding of how and why these deaths happen.
