Summary

At the end of her first week on the job, rookie deputy Kelly Mackinaw finds herself trapped on Lost Lake with three unidentified bodies, twelve potential killers and one vengeful ghost.

Wanakena County, NY. June 1973.

On a remote lake deep in the Adirondacks, Kelly, a tough, practical country girl and Mitch Herkemer, a Vietnam vet with extensive knowledge of illegal substances and a shaky understanding of Eastern religions, rush to solve a gruesome mystery before a simmering feud between a group of rich swingers and a family of local squatters erupts into a full-scale shooting war.

As the first female deputy in Wanakena County, Kelly can see with an outsider’s eye. As a witness to the mysteries of Lost Lake in his youth, Mitch has troubled insights of his own. Kelly sees corruption and lies everywhere, while Mitch sees tangled auras and conflicting moral responsibilities. Both soon realize that the source of the conflict lies in the brooding village of Shallow Rock, where a sinister cabin squats in the stinking muck of Shakers Bog.

Jane Doe was a promising anthropologist, an expert on shamanism. Now she's nothing, a shadow living under an assumed identity in Miami with a little girl to protect. Everyone thinks she's dead. Or so Jane hopes.
Then the killings start, a series of ritualistic murders that terrifies all of Miami. The investigator is Jimmy Paz, a Cuban-American police detective. There are witnesses, but they can recall almost nothing of the events, as though their memory has been erased -- as if a spell has been cast on each of them. Equally bizarre is the string of clues Paz uncovers: a divination charm, exotic drugs found in the bodies of the victims, a century-old report telling of a secret place in the heart of Africa.
These clues point Paz inexorably toward the fugitive, Jane Doe, and force Jane to realize that the darkness she has fled is hunting her down. By the time her path intersects with Jimmy Paz's, the two will be thrust into a cataclysmic battle with an evil unimaginable to the Western mind.
    Performed by Margaret Whitton.

A propulsive novel of ambition, greed, and the deadly fury of Mother Nature, as a female driller takes charge of an isolated offshore oil rig with an entirely male crew. When Zainab, an expert driller, is tasked with overseeing a high-stakes oil rig operation, she leaves behind her pregnant sister to embark on the most challenging assignment of her career. But there's a catch. The rig is teetering on the edge of disaster—and Zainab is the only woman among a crew of hardened men who want absolutely nothing to do with her.At the helm, but forced to prove herself at every turn, Zainab investigates the issues that have plagued the operation. When all her warnings are ignored, she quickly grasps that the real danger may lie in the cold calculations and base desires of the men determined to finish the operation as quickly and cheaply as possible. As tensions rise and secrets unravel, Zainab races to prevent the looming catastrophe that threatens the rig, the lives of the crew, and the welfare of the sea before it's too late.Haunting, original, and as poetic as it is gripping, At Sea is a thrilling and distinctly modern novel that meditates on science and faith and reckons with ethics, prejudice, and the capitalist endeavors that overlook our humanity—and of Mother Nature herself.
