Sinopse

Needs Must by Baroness Orczy is offered here in a clean English digital edition prepared for fluent ebook reading. The work stands within classics and gives modern readers direct access to a public-domain classic with navigable structure and a restrained typographic presentation. The opening pages establish the book's atmosphere with this first movement: THE children were all huddled up together in one corner of the room. Étienne and Valentine, the two eldest, had their arms round the little one. As for Lucile, she would have told you herself that she felt just like a bird between two snakes—terrified and fascinated—especially by that little man wit This edition is suited to readers who want a reliable, uncluttered version of the text for study, rediscovery, and sustained reading.

London, 1916: a German-born gentleman moves in the best houses, dines at the best clubs, and something is going out of England to the enemy through channels the Admiralty cannot find. Oppenheim worked in his father's leather business for twenty years while writing at night, then produced some hundred and fifteen novels from a villa on the Riviera; the wartime paranoia here is contemporary reporting, not hindsight. Fifty-nine plates of painting, among them John Lavery and Spencer Gore, track the dinner parties, clubs and jury rooms of the London that Oppenheim's traitor moves through.

Evil has taken control of the monastery. In search of a solution, Hildegard is drawn into a profound murder mystery driven by her worst nightmares.
    The Evil Abess
    A Cloister Mystery
The bells toll. The blood dries. The prayers go on.
In the year of our Lord 1123, something unpleasant is growing behind the abbey walls. It smells like murder, sounds like chanting, and behaves very much like a cover-up.
Sister Hildegard has never been particularly obedient. She sees too much. She hears what isn't said. And she asks questions no nun should.
Now someone is punishing sins that haven't been confessed—and the Rule of Saint Benedict offers no guidance for corpses in the cloister.
The abbess says it's the Devil.
    Hildegard suspects something worse.
    Something local.
A tale of sacred rituals, petty power struggles, and suspicious silence, The Evil Abess reveals what happens when the truly faithful stop forgiving—and start investigating.

Fenton was later to regret that he had not been more careful, not stayed more alert and on guard. But when a man does not in the least resemble a killer in his outer aspect, when he can grin boyishly, and disarm everyone with his blunt forthrightness, his wry humor, his complete absence of even the everyday, garden-variety kind of neuroticism which afflicts nine men and women out of ten—when, in short, he seems more robustly wholesome, normal than a football player with a well-rounded love life, it is very easy for a man to go a little astray emotionally and assume that he cant be too dangerous in an immediate way....FROM THE BOOKS.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on the 16th October 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. The son of Dublin intellectuals Oscar proved himself an outstanding classicist at Trinity College and then at Oxford.
Wilde then moved to London and its fashionable cultural and social circles. With his biting wit, flamboyant dress, and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the most well-known personalities of his day.
His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was published in 1890 and he then moved on to writing for the stage with ‘Salome’ in 1891. His society comedies were enormous hits and turned him into one of the most successful writers of late Victorian London.
Whilst his masterpiece, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, was on stage in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, prosecuted for libel. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency. He was convicted and imprisoned for two years hard labour. It was to break him.
On release he left for France. There he wrote his last work, ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ in 1898. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six sipping champagne a friend had brought with the line ‘Alas I am dying beyond my means’.
