Synopsis

The Traitor is a gripping early tale by Baroness Orczy that foreshadows the suspense and intrigue of her later works. Set in the perilous days of Revolutionary France, the story explores the thin line between loyalty and betrayal, where a single act of treachery can condemn friends, lovers, or family to the guillotine. With her flair for atmosphere and tension, Orczy paints a portrait of desperate choices in a world ruled by suspicion and fear. Short yet powerful, The Traitor delivers an emotional punch, reminding readers that courage and betrayal often walk hand in hand in times of upheaval.

'The Lovely Lady' is a fine observation of a life - the lovely lady of the title - which thrives by sucking the life out of others. The two victims escape by a somewhat melodramatic and comical means but in the process destroy the lovely lady and form what will probably be a dull and passionless union.

Asian Shorts came about because of a sequence of events on one weekend in May 2015. A friend was telling me that he had several short stories with Asia as a backdrop, I was saying that I had a few as well, another friend sent me an email that he wanted to write a short on Pattaya, and one of my Thai cousins sent me her latest photo, the one on the cover of this book.
It was like somebody was trying to tell me something, or several were anyway.

The twelve stories in Letting Go take us on a journey through landscape, language and turbulent times, from the mid-19th century to the present day, and into the future. Stevenson's array of characters from many walks of life and nationalities – including a traveller, a wood carver, chicken farm workers, a nurse, an architect and a magician – meet and part, some becoming reacquainted.
Themes exploring identity, creativity and the environment, echo and connect throughout the different narratives, sometimes carried in snatches of song. The author leads us outward from her native Scottish Borders to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Gàidhealtachd, south to England, across the Atlantic to Apartheid South Africa and, finally, to the melting Arctic.

    The Travelling Salesman - James...

James Mason is a rogue, some would say a lovable rogue. He is a salesman of items that any guesthouse on the south coast of England can’t manage without, and he spends his weeks travelling along from one city to another, encouraging landladies to purchase his products. In the evenings he stays with one or other of his customers and very often ends up spanking them or their eighteen-year-old daughters.
Each week he stays in a central point and usually stays at the same guesthouse from Sunday night to Saturday morning. How does he choose the guesthouse? I hear you ask. Is it always by the quality of their accommodation? “Yeah, right!”
He rates the guesthouses he stays at in the following way.
    1. Is the landlady a single woman?
    2. Is he properly looked after when he stays there?
    3. Does the landlady have a daughter?
    4. Is the room cheap?
    5. Will the landlady write an invoice for twice what she charges him, for his expense claim?
    6. Does the landlady and/or her daughter like to be spanked?
    7. Is the account a small one?
When he is thinking with the part of his brain that he keeps in his pants, all of the above criteria are combined and then discarded if he discovers that number six is in place.
He just loves spanking naughty girls, and you will be amazed at how many he finds when he’s travelling.
He is thirty-two years old and still looks pretty good in the suit that he wears when he is selling. No tie nowadays, of course. He doesn't exercise at all but he is very fit, being on his feet most of the day and exercising on his back in the evenings, three times a week usually. He never apologises for his behaviour. Up to you if you approve or not. Most people don’t seem to care.
