Summary

My father, Prince Theodore Galitzine, married my mother being a widower with five children, three of whom died before my birth. My earliest vivid recollections begin when I was two years old. I distinctly remember feeling a terrible pain in parting with my wet-nurse, to whom I was passionately attached. I got hold of her skirt and wouldn’t let her go, weeping wildly. It was my first bitter affliction. I could not put up with the new nurse, whom I hated from the depths of my little heart, and I would not call her otherwise than Wild Cat, with baby petulance, having already at that early age pronounced likes and dislikes. We were in perpetual state of warfare. When I was about three years old that nurse was succeeded by a pretty Belgian girl named Melle. Henriette. The tutor of my two step-brothers, Mr. Liziar, made love to her and finished by marrying her some time after. He seemed somewhat half-witted; by night he went to chime the bells at the belfry of our village church in Dolgik, a fine estate belonging to my father, in the government of Kharkoff, and also amused himself by breaking, in the conservatory, the panes of glass with big stones. One day he frightened his sweetheart nearly to death by throwing a snake under her feet. After all these pranks it is no way astonishing that Mr. Liziar finished his days in a lunatic asylum. The tutor who succeeded him, asked my parents to bring his wife with him. He hastened to pocket the hundred roubles taken beforehand on account of his salary, and departed suddenly to Kharkoff to fetch her. Meanwhile my father received a letter from this tutor’s legitimate wife dated from St. Petersburg, in which she entreated papa to send her the half of her husband’s monthly salary, telling him he spent all his money on his mistress, whilst his wife and children had not a morsel of bread to put into their mouths.

“Sabe didn’t have a turning point. It wasn’t just one thing. But I do remember him saying that he did not want to pass the baton on to our kids. He wanted to change his life around. He wanted to get help. He didn’t enjoy what he was doing. He wanted things to get better. He wanted to be a good dad.
    . . . And I believed him. I really did.”
Tech executive, business consultant and recording artist Sabe Anderson delivers a no-holds-barred account of his spiral into hell and how he clawed his way out again with the support of family and the women who refused to give up on him. His story dives into bipolar disorder, sexual abuse, and addiction and the financial, mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional hardships that came in their wake.
Acknowledging that family traumas rarely affect only one generation, Sabe’s mother’s words weave in and out of his own, showing her struggle to love and help Sabe’s alcoholic father while raising their boys into good men. Together, these two narratives tell an inspiring and heartbreaking story about learning how to control and transform the physical, spiritual, and emotional illnesses of life through specific, incremental changes.

Jesus Is Not Republican - A...

    Kate Rice

This sassy memoir by a party girl with a broken heart takes an irreverent look at religious teachings that made her an easy victim of a love gone wrong. And in telling her story, she shows how the right hijacked Jesus—and gives moderates and progressives of all faiths and of no faith a recipe for taking back God, flag and country.
Here are revelations, Kate Rice style. For example, the Apostle Paul says (in ancient Greek), shit happens. (Corinthians 6; 1-13). Also, Bible wasn’t written in English. It was written Aramaic, Hebrew and ancient Greek. A literal interpretation of the Bible is impossible.
She introduces the tatted up minister who preaches the joy of sex, church-going progressives standing strong in a rural America that is not as red as you think, and believers and non-believers who work together!
This battle-scarred veteran of three different religions explains our nation’s wrestling match with religion, politics, and sex by viewing it through the prism of her own struggles. She pokes fun at hypocrites but shows love and respect for true people of faith. And then she gives us all a pep talk about what we can do to keep our nation one that guarantees freedom for all.

Born to a Jewish mother and Ukrainian father during the final years of the Soviet Union, Yuliya Patsay grew up believing bread lines were a fun way to spend an afternoon, drafts caused pneumonia, and that Lenin was everyone’s benevolent grandpa. After trading pickled herring and Soviet winters for San Francisco fog and year-round produce (the real American dream!) she found herself occupying two parallel universes: the first grounded in her Soviet roots and the second in her burgeoning ‘Amerikanskiye’ beliefs.Irreverent, nostalgic and vulnerable, Until the Last Pickle, is a memoir replete with remembrances, anecdotes, and exactly 18 recipes. It’s an exploration of identity and belonging — at once, deeply personal and broadly relatable — told through the lens of one family’s “totally average” immigration journey.
