Summary

Beautiful and innocent, yet perceptive and intelligent the Rector’s daughter, Odella Wayne, suspects that the local circus fortune-teller, Madame Zosina, is using her ‘special powers’ to hoodwink British sailors into revealing their warships’ embarkation times at Portsmouth in order to pass the information on to Napoleon’s spies and the French Navy is waiting to attack them at sea. This is 1814 and a year before the Battle of Waterloo when the French are Great Britain’s deadliest enemies and they will stop at nothing to defeat and humiliate the British whenever they feel that they can get away with it.When Odella reports her fears to the dashing and handsome war hero, the Marquis of Midhurst, he asks her to risk her life for her country by drugging Madame Zosina and secretly taking her place in the fortune-tellers’ tent at the circus.Drawn into the terrifying world of wartime espionage, Odella alone can potentially identity a French assassin on a mission to kill His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, having overheard his dastardly plotting. At terrible risk of losing her life, she has already lost her heart to the Marquis when he saves her from the killer’s knife and sweeps her up in his arms –

Mary Cholmondeley was born in Hodnet near Market Drayton in Shropshire on June 8th 1859, the third of eight children. Her father was appointed rector in 1874 in succession to his father. Much of the first 30 years of her life was taken up with helping her sickly mother run the household, her father with his parish work, and mitigating the effects of her asthma.
Mary began writing in her teens. She wrote in her journal in 1877, "What a pleasure and interest it would be to me in life to write books. I must strike out a line of some kind, and if I do not marry (for at best that is hardly likely, as I possess neither beauty nor charms) I should want some definite occupation, besides the home duties."
Mary began by publishing her stories in The Graphic and her first novel ‘The Danvers Jewels’ a detective story followed in 1887. Thereafter came, amongst others, ‘Sir Charles Danvers’ (1889) and ‘Diana Tempest’ (1893).
After her father retired in 1896, she moved with him and her sister Diana to Condover Hall before a move to Albert Gate Mansions in Knightsbridge, London.
Mary wrote the best seller ‘Red Pottage’ in 1899. It satirised religious hypocrisy and the conceit of country life. It was denounced as immoral. It also explored female sexuality.
During the war she did clerical work in the Carlton House Terrace Hospital. The sisters moved in 1919 to 4 Argyll Road, Kensington, where Mary died, on 15th July 1925.

"Enjoyable entertainment . . . a mystery/suspense novel with links to classic rock history and mythology" featuring recovering detective Mike Travis (Foreword).

After twenty years at the LAPD Homicide Bureau, Mike Travis is finally retiring and starting over on Santa Catalina Island. In the small town of Avalon, he lives and works on his yacht, sailing and chartering scuba diving trips. There, among tourists and quirky locals, he tries to banish the residual darkness from his mind. It's not that easy, especially when the one case he never solved comes back to haunt him . . .

A murdered woman on Venice Beach bears all the signs of the serial killer Travis had been tracking before he retired: a single stab wound to the heart, a series of deep cuts on the left hand, and a cryptic message—this time, a grisly computer-generated image of a lizard. To finally finish what the killer has started, all Travis must do is get as far into the madman's head as he can before the next victim is targeted—and then hope he can crawl back out again . . .
